It became an independent city on December 17, 1907. In 1906, Topeka hosted America's First National Agricultural Fair which featured exhibits from around the world. The fairgrounds are now used for various events including rodeos and concerts throughout the year. In 1933, Topeka became one of thirty-six cities in America to become involved in the New Deal Coalition government under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal agenda which included financial assistance for local businesses and programs such as food stamps and housing allowances for low-income citizens

Topeka, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 97,871 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in both Wichita and Topeka. It is also one of the most populous cities in Kansas City metropolitan area, with a population of 568,903 as of July 1, 2018. The first permanent settler in what is now Topeka was John A. Sibley on January 16, 1847. He named his land "Wichita". On May 25, 1851, the Territorial Legislature voted to name Topeka after General James Hays's headquarters at Council Bluffs in Iowa Territory - while still being east of Shawnee Mission Creek (now called Blue River). On October 15, 1857 Topeka became an independent city when it annexed the towns of Pittsfield and Mound City from Newton County following a vote by its citizens. On February 4th 1870 Topeka annexes part of Lawrence County to become its second city limits with a population of 452 residents; however Lawrence County never ratified annexation and remains unincorporated today. In 1893 Topeka adopted its present name - "Topeka" - when then-Governor Hiram Johnson ordered that all new federal government agencies be known by their original names rather than adopting new acronyms such as DAGER or EPA; Johnson wanted to avoid any confusion over who had control over which agency's acronym topekas used for which purpose (i.e., for naming streets and buildings). In 1907 Topeka annexes much larger Hutchinson County to form its third city limits with a population of 994 residents; Hutchinson County never ratified annexation and remains unincorporated today like Lawrence County did before it. In 1912 Wichita acquired all but two square miles (less than one quarter acre) surrounding downtown Topeka from Ottawa Township due to an agreement between then-Mayor Edwin Jorgenson and representatives from Wichita Mayor George Stephenson's administration – this land formed what is now Midtown Wichita shopping district today known as Union Station areas including Shawnee Mission Creek Boulevard/Upper Main Street/Eighth Street SW according to real estate website Zillow . In 1929 Wichita annexed most of Dallas Township which formed downtown Wichita again although Douglas Heights forms some parts within that boundary too according to KS Historical Society web site . That same year Wichita annexed much smaller Atchison Village forming finally what is currently north side intersection Kossuth Avenue/Edwards Road NE & south side intersection Wabash Avenue/Old Depot RoadSW which would eventually become North Side Historic District boundaries according on website boundaries map created by KS Historical Society staff
