Shawnee, Kansas (May 12, 1813 – October 10, 1863) was a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. It was chartered on December 14, 1854. The population was 973 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Shawnee was John Sutter. He and his family arrived in 1847 from California and started a farm on the east side of the Platte River. In 1850 they moved to what is now Shawnee Heights; their home still stands there today. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Shawnee lost its status as a town when it became part of Lawrence county. It had been considered an important railroad hub because of its location between Topeka and Wichita Falls. However, by 1865 it had shrunk to just a few hundred residents due to economic problems caused by the war and other factors such as increased Indian settlement in central Kansas.

Shawnee is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. Shawnee was founded in 1854 as a post office and community by settlers from Illinois. It became an incorporated town in 1907. The Shawnee people are a Native American tribe who live east of the Missouri River in present-day Sedgwick and Haskell counties. Shawnee's first European settler, John Armstrong, came to what is now Shawnee in 1854 on horseback after traveling for two months through Indian Territory. He named the area "Shawnee" because he saw trees there that resembled those near Chicago, Illinois. In 1907, when Shawnee incorporation occurred, it had a population of 1,500 people and included parts of both Sedgwick and Haskell counties. The majority of its residents were Cherokee Indians who had moved to Kansas from Oklahoma since the early 1800s because of land grants given to them by then-President James Kansa. Residents of nearby Topeka began moving out of Shawnee during the 1920s as Wichita developed along the Arkansas River corridor northward into Kansas City territory; Topeka's growth led to its annexation by Shawnee in 1930.
