The National Guard in Shawnee, Kansas has been providing service to the community for over 100 years. The Guard was organized on July 1, 1912 as the "Shawnee County Sheriff's posse." On December 12 of that year, the first state visit by a U.S. president was made to Shawnee and President Woodrow Wilson attended a football game between the Shropshire Regiment and the Shawnee Infantry. The Guard was activated on January 16, 1915 when World War I began and served in both theaters of war. In 1919, Lt. Col. John Wickersham organized the Guard into battalions which remain operational to this day. On November 4th of that year, Congressman Seward requested $1 million from Congress to be used for military purposes in Oklahoma City during an address before a joint session of Congress.
