Shawnee is a small town in Clinton County, Kansas, United States. The Shawnee community was founded in 1854 by the Shawnees and other Native Americans after they were driven out of their home on the Wichita River. The name "Shawnee" is derived from the Ojibwe word ichi-ni ( meaning "place where we go"). The Shawnee people were once one of the most powerful groups of Indian Reservations in the United States. They were also one of the few Indian tribes that successfully resisted white settlement throughout much of what is now Kansas. In terms of economic development, however, they have struggled over the years. Today, Shawnee remains an agricultural center with a population of about 1,500 people. In 1854, when settlers first arrived in this area, there were only five or six permanent residents living hereabouts: three men, two women and children; and four cattle and horses. Farming started very slowly because it was difficult to get water for irrigation from nearby springs and rivers. About two years later an agreement was made between several local chiefs and traders to trade goods for land grants from President James Krieger at Fort Leavenworth. The first grantees included John Darnell, who received a piece of land across creek from today's town; Nicholas French; Elijah Whitehead; David Balthazar; Samuel Sibley; and George Stephenson. Others granted during this time include Isaac Phelps (1856); Ebenezer Beall (1858); Peter Hennepin (1859); Ephraim Goodrich (1860); Jonas Nourse (1861). A total of 143 tracts were awarded during these transactions - more than any other group excepting Missourians! Thereafter farming became more prosperous as farmers learned how to cultivate crops using early European technology such as plows which had not been available on American soil at that time! By 1870 around 175 acres had been cultivated with corn being grown on topsoil near present day Beattyville while potatoes were grown near present day Topeka .
