In 1861, when American forces invaded Kansas to remove Native Americans from their land, Shawnee sided with the U.S. military and helped to fight against the invaders. Afterward, Shawnee continued to play an important role in local life and culture until its final demise in 1932. The history of Shawnee begins with its founding by the Shawneese people who lived in what is now eastern Kansas and western Oklahoma. The first settlers arrived in 1854, and they soon established a small village on the banks of the Missouri River near present-day Topeka. By 1861, however, American forces had invaded southern Kansas Territory to remove Native Americans from their lands –a decision that caused great dismay among many of these early residents. Some chose to stay and fight alongside US Marines while others fled into hiding or took up arms against America’s invaders. Ultimately, only a few hundred Indians were removed from their homes during this time period –most of whom ended up resettling in new settlements throughout southeastern Illinois and Ohio (now Kentucky). In 1862, after successfully completing his military campaigns against Native Americans at Perryville and Osage Heights west of Wichita Falls (then part of Texas), General William Hanchett ordered General Phil Kearny to march on northern Kansas under cover of darkness so as not to alarmreet any local tribesmen living along the way (Kearny actually traveled fewer than two miles beyond his original destination). The Shawnee tribe was one of the many Native American tribes that lived in present-day Kansas and Oklahoma. The Shawnee were a branch of the Potawatomi people. They migrated from their original homeland in eastern Illinois to what is now Kansas in the late 18th century.
