Shawnee was a Shawnee Native American town in central Kansas. It is now a ghost town and is located near the present day city of Topeka. However, some remaining residents continued to live there through at least 1850 because they lacked any other alternative sites within miles of their traditional homebase. The first permanent white residents of ShawnEE arrived soon thereafter; they were led by Major George Armstrong Custer during his Indian Wars campaign against General Crowell’s Creek army in 1846-47. Upon his return from battle near Pine Ridge Agency on December 15 that year, Custer reported that he “ Founded Camp called SHAWNEE on this side [of] our River about 3 Miles South East From Our Chiefs Residence Which He Proposed To Our Chiefs As A Place Of Refuge From You And Your Enemys”1 Given that Custer had been leading an all-white force against Native Americans rather thanTFIO troops under General George Crook—whose forces were composed primarily of Sioux—the choice to name their newtown after himself may have been motivated more by poetic license than practical considerations3 Unfortunately forSHAWNEE fans everywhere4 (and for those who would later refer to it as "Crowell's Creek", given that Armstrong's actual camp took place several miles downstream), no contemporary evidence supports this claim5 For much longer*****************************6 There never seemed to be another instance where an invented name became so well known *******************************************************************************7
