The Shawnee Army Ammunition Plant was the world's largest and most advanced ammunition plant when it was built in 1908. It played an important role in World War I and II, and is still used today to produce munitions. The plant closed in 2006, but has been preserved as a museum. The Shawnee army was an American army that served in the Mexican-American War. The Shawnee were a nation of Native Americans who lived in present-day Kansas and Oklahoma.
Shawnee, Kansas is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The Shawnee Mission Indian Agency and school are located in the village of Shawnee. Shawnee is part of the Topeka-Edwardsburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white men to arrive in what is now Shawnee were fur traders from Montreal. In 1824, they founded Fort Smith on the Arkansas River as a trading post for their activities along the Missouri River. James Wofford explored and mapped what would become Shawnee Territory in 1827 while stationed at Fort Smith. In 1830, Ulysses S. Grant named it after Chief Shawneetowne of the Osage Nation and removed all Native American inhabitants from that region east of the Mississippi River. In 1834, settlers began moving into what would become ShawnEE Territory from nearby counties including Geary County and Osborne County due to increasing railroad development across Iowa andKansas state lines. On July 15, 1836, when Union Pacific Railroad officials arrived near present day Topeka to survey plans for its main line through central Kansas, they found abandoned villages with few or no people remaining scattered throughout much of this area including adjacent Osage Nation land which lay within Nebraska territory at that time. Although most residents had fled during Indian Removal Act days (April 16-May 4), some took refuge behind fences at ranch buildings until Army troops could arrive two days later to remove them all without violence or bloodshed following an hourslong standoff with treaty checkers deployed by both sides as part of a competition for control over this newly acquired piece of land coveted by both menaces: Indians and whites alike saw it as finally theirs given that Congress had approved Manifest Destiny 2 years earlier—the goal being to open up new Frontiersland so settlement could take place unimpeded by indigenous peoples living there before Manifest Destiny's arrival seeking parity and compensation for losses suffered during America's westward expansion (see also: Trail of Tears). Shawnee was founded in 1837 by George Armstrong Custer, the first American general to be killed in battle. The town was named for a Shawnee chief. It was located on the Kansas River and became a major trading center for fur traders and settlers during the early 19th century. In 1854, Shawnee was destroyed by a fire that burned for days. The town never recovered and its population dwindled until it disappeared completely in the late 1800s. Shawnee is one of only a few towns in Kansas with significant historical roots dating back to the 1800s. It is also one of just two towns in Kansas with a 16-acre square mile (540 m2) plot of land as its municipal core, which makes it unique among U.S. cities or villages. Despite this antiquity, little is known about Shawnee’s history before the mid-19th century because no primary source documents its past either through oral histories or written records. This lack of documentary evidence has caused some historians to theorize that Shawnee may have been founded earlier than previously thought and that it may have been absorbed into other adjacent settlements over time – something that would make sense given that Shawnee had close ties to both Canada and Mexico at various points throughout its history.
