Air Force gift history in Shawnee, Kansas dates back to the early days of the Air Force. The Army's First Air Service Corps was Trained and equipped by the USAAF to provide airlift for American troops during World War I. On December 17, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan. In response, the USAAF activated its Second Air Service Corps which consisted of former Army pilots and enlisted men from other services who had been trained at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. This corps was soon renamed the Eighth Air Force and allotted several Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses as well as P-51 Mustangs for training. On December 12th 1942, General Arnold ordered the activation of Third Air Force which consisted of 830 military personnel from 23 commands spanning all branches of service under one command structure. By February 1943 it had become evident that Japan was not going to surrender so America prepared for an extended battle against a heavily armed enemy. During this time there were many impressive achievements by both third air forces and ground forces including;the successful bombing of Hiroshima on April 6th 1945;the capture of Tokyo Bay on September 2nd 1945;and utter destruction wrought upon Nagasaki on September 9th 1945. However, it is also important to note that many servicemen lost their lives in these campaigns such as Colonel Edward "Buzz" Aldrin who became the first man to walk into space aboard Apollo 11 while serving with Third Air Force;and Major General Curtis LeMay who led Second Air Force during Operation Overlord which caused World War II's greatest strategic defeat at Normandy beaches where more than 50% of German heavy industry was destroyed or captured intact

However, the people who lived here were able to survive because they were able to use their intelligence and creativity to come up with ways to make money. One of the early settlers in this area was John Cairns. He built a trading post near Shawnee in 1827. This post helped start the growth of Shawnee. also, other traders soon followed suit, starting businesses in Shawnee and elsewhere on the Great Plains. The first courthouse in this town was built by Judge George Catron in 1868. This building became an important tool for court proceedings and served as a center for culture and education here in Shawnee until 1957. In 1907, the city of Shawnee was incorporated into Topeka, Kansas. This move happened because Topeka wanted more business opportunities nearby so they could compete with Wichita, Kansas which had become popular as a major city due to its economy based on agriculture and oil production. Today, Shawnee is still a vibrant community with many residents who are continuation of its history and culture!
