Salina is a city in Saline County, Kansas, United States. The population was 4,024 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita– Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Salina was James Purdy in 1855. A post office was established here in 1857 and the town got its name from General George Armstrong Custer who fought at the Battle of Little Bighorn on July 6, 1885. The Custers were living near the present day intersection of 9th Street and Main Street when they were killed during an ambush by Sioux Indians on July 5, 1890. The town site became part of Topeka after that city was founded in 1907. In 1920, Jesse Wagoner started a bottling company which later became Penn-Dupont Bottling Company and still exists today as a subsidiary of PepsiCo Incorporated. In 1925, Harry Sprague opened his first grocery store here which remains open to this day as Sprague's Market No 1 Today's businesses include: Salina High School (now known as Salina Community Schools), KFC Yum! Brands LLC., US Airways Airlines Co., 10% owned by Warren Buffett LLC., Brown-Forman Corporation (makers of Brown-Forman bourbon), First Solar Incorporated (manufacturer of solar energy systems) and many others

Salina, Kansas is a small town located in Sedgwick County, Kansas. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Salina has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years and is one of the oldest towns in Kansas. The first settlers to Salina were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1836. They built a log cabin on the north side of the river and named it "Watervliet." In 1841, John Ladds came to Salina from Dodge City and founded a flour mill that still operates today. Ladds also donated land to the town which became known as "Ladd's Field." The first post office was established in 1848 and was called "Oregon." In 1861, Missouri River flood destroyed most of Oregon so Salina renamed itself "Oregon" again. The first school was opened in 1865 and taught grades one through four. By 1870, there were seven schools in Salina withgrades five through eight being open only during summer months. In 1872, an oil well was drilled near present-day downtown Salina and began production of oil fuel for local businesses. This led to increased business demand for goods available at salinashops such as wheat flour and soap made from oilseed lye products. In 1875, Jens Rasmussen purchased land east of central Salina from William Burtch for $4 per acre (about $40 per square mile). Rasmussen turned this into what is now downtown Salina after purchasing two blocks of land from Burtch on October 25th, 1875. Rasmussen also built a house on this block which still stands today as part of downtownSalINA's history museum complex known as the Rasmussen House Museum Complex (RHMC). Rasmussen served as mayor of Salinas from 1898 until his death in 1901; he is buried at Elmwood Cemetery southeast of downtownSalINA off Michigan Avenue between First Street & Seventh Street NW., just south of Pioneer Square Park bounded by Third Street NW., State Capitol Avenue NE., Independence Ave., Northwest Drive SW., & University Dr.. From 1907 until 1916, Abe Kempster served as mayor; he is buried at Elmwood Cemetery northeastof downtownSalINA off Michigan Avenue between First Street & SeventhStreet NW.. Kempster co-founded America's Second National Bank building now partof American Express Plaza across the street from RHMC adjacent to KEMPSTER MEMORIAL FIELD Internationally renowned archaeologist Harry Elmer Morley discovered human remains dated back to around 8000 BC while excavating near present day intersectionState Capitol Ave NE& Northwest Drive SW during his 1985 archaeological field season within walking distance form RHMC - thus providing yet another layerBeneaththesoilfor future archaeologiststo explore!
