The first settlers in what is now Salina were Democrats who had come from Emporia and Topeka. They lobbied for land grants that would give them control over their own affairs and they named their town after General James K. Polk because he visited it during his Polk presidency in 1846 as part of a survey of national lands. In 1881, when railroad developers wanted to build a line through town, locals gathered to stop the train and force its operators to change course; this led to one of the most famous moments in American history when Marshal John Brown rode into town on horseback and announced that he was going to start a civil war between Missourians andKansas Alabamians (the "Buffalo Soldiers"). After seeing Buffalo Soldiers fighting in nearby Douglasville, Union troops invaded Salina on November 16th 1862 under General Ulysses S. Grant hoping to scare off Confederate forces besieging Fort Hays; however they found no one home so they began looting local stores before turning their attention towards military supplies stored inside the fortification which went untouched until later that day when Union soldiers arrived with cannons sent by President Abraham Lincoln to quash any civilian resistance. A fight ensued which ended with 3 civilians dead and dozens more wounded including several children who were playing near the fortifications when cannonballs hit them and killed them instantly>. On December 5th 1865 Union General George Armstrong Custer detonated an explosive charge inside Fort Hays rather than risk being captured by Confederate forces given his recent successes against Indians up north> resulting in much destruction both within and outside of town> leading many people fleeing towards Topeka where they started organizing themselves into militias or brigades> eventually reaching independence as Oklahoma on January 14th 1907.>> In 1902 newspapers reported that salina was receiving water from an underground salt mine owned by Joplin Electric Company but no further information exists about this mine or salina's connection thereto
