Salina, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas that is located on the Salina River. The population was 1,904 as of the 2010 census. It lies about 20 miles (31 km) south-southwest of Wichita and 30 miles (48 km) east-northeast of Topeka. The town was founded in 1854 by John Ahern as part of what would become the Territory of Shawnee. From its inception, Salina served as a center for agricultural production and a transportation hub for settlers moving westward from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. By 1870, Salina had become an important stop on stagecoaches transporting goods to Dodge City and points north. The arrival of the railroad in 1892 helped stimulate growth in Salina and other nearby towns, eventually leading to their incorporation into Wichita County. As Wichita County grew more populous and diverse, so too did its economy; Salina experienced significant economic development during both World War II and the post-war period. In recent decades, however, salinatown has seen increasing gentrification—a trend Playtex LLC., which operates a number of businesses within walking distance of downtown—has aided in reversing. With less than 2% joblessness rates among all employed residents aged 25 years or older according to 2016 Census data*, Salina continues to serve as an important cultural and commercial center for the region.
