The museum was founded in 1978 as the Salina Naval Shipyard Historical Society. In 1990, it became the Marine Museum of Salina Incorporated. The marine industry in Salina began with the construction of USS Belle Isle (DD-611) in 1907 by local shipbuilder J.P. Stevens & Sons shipyards. USS Belle Isle served as an training vessel for naval officers and sailors until she was sunk during World War II while serving as flagship of Task Group 41st Battle Squadron off Okinawa, Japan. In 1956, Sailing School No. 5 established at USS Belle Isle School House on west Main Street Dock No 2 near present day US Army Ammunition Plant #2 developed into United States Marine Corps Sailors’ Reserve Schools which taught basic seamanship to enlisted Marines from coastal communities along Isthmus Of Panama until their discharge from service or death aboard ships during Operation Neptune’s Spear (1962). This period may have been one of greatest activity for the marine industry in Salina when many new vessels were being constructed including: USS Wichita (AO-10), USS Montero (LPD-9), USS Pueblo (LPH-1),USS Mobile Bay (AF-5),USS Tacoma (CA-38)and others which can be seen at various locations around town throughout ourhistory! In 1984, The Naval Shipyard History Society changed its name to The Marine Museum ofSalina Incorporated because that is where all collections were located before moving to our current location on West Main Street between US Army Ammunition Plant #2 and 4th Avenue North since then!
