Salina, Kansas is a town in Saline County, Kansas, United States. The population was 6,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1881, John Sitton founded the town of Sitton on the west fork of the Arkansas River. The name honor him for his father's donation of land to establish Salina as a town. In 1912, a new school building was completed and named after Mrs. Lillie Wohlgemuth—the wife of Captain John Wohlgemuth (a local cattleman). In 1917-1918, World War I caused significant destruction in eastern Kansas which had an impact on towns such as Salina; most residents fled or were forced out during that time period. Salina became an important railroad center during the 1880s when it served as terminus for the Santa Fe Railroad’s Chicago Branch Line which connected Omaha with Denver and other westward destinations. Railroads played an important role in making life easier for settlers in this region as they transported goods such as flour, meat, potatoes, oilseed crops, lumber and coal to markets throughout the Midwest. In 1886, local farmers organized into what is now known as the “Kansas Agricultural Society” to improve farming techniques and promote irrigation systems across Kansas farmland. The society helped develop better seed varieties for corn production; developed efficient irrigation systems; drafted legislation creating agricultural colleges across Kansas state; funded research projects that improved farm productivity;and lobbied legislatures to pass laws protecting rural property rights
