Salina, Kansas is a city in and the county seat of Saline County, Kansas, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Salina were Frenchmen who may have been travelling from St. Louis through present-dayKansas when they discovered a region full of rich oil shale deposits near the confluence of the Arkansas and Santa Fe Rivers on November 12, 1864. They named their new settlement "Saint Laurent." The town was platted in 1867 by John Dennison and James Phelan, both Methodists from New York City. The first post office was established in 1870; it was called "Dennisonville" until 1875. The discovery of oil shale led to an intense petroleum boom in Salina during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1901, salinity problems caused many wells to dry up or be abandoned; however, this did not end the production of oil shale though some wells did close because of high salt levels in water used to clean them. Salina, Kansas was founded in 1847 by the Wichita and Santa Fe Railroad. The city was named for Salina, Mexico, the original home of the Wichita and Santa Fe Railroad. The railroad arrived in 1847 and built a line from Topeka to Salina. In 1865, the Wichita and Santa Fe Railway merged with the Kansas City Central Railway. The merger created the Kansas City, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. In 1907, the KCTF bought out all of the other railways in Kansas. The KCTF continued to operate various companies until it went bankrupt in 1968. The Salina community developed rapidly after topography made farming possible on wide swaths of what is now central Nebraska. By 1870 there were 1,500 people living in Salina; by 1910 that number had grown to 10,000+. strenuous agriculture led to increased demand for labor on large plantations near Fort Kearny and Dodge City as well as for workers on small farms throughout central Nebraska (Logan 2005). However, although salinas developed into one of America’s leading cotton-growing regions during this time period (Wright 1979), they also experienced significant demographic change due to waves of immigrants who came during the late 1800s seeking new opportunities in America (Logan 2005). In 1920–21 a group of Dutch Protestants organized themselves as an Evangelical Lutheran Church –Kansas congregation which became known as “The German Evangelical Lutheran Church –Kansas” or simply “GEMAK” for short (Barton 1996). GEMAK served as a Basis Group for immigrant settlement activity within Salina from 1921 until its dissolution in 1948 when that district fell within Sedgwick County (Moses 2008a). Despite its name change GEMAK generally struggled with intercommunal conflict which often led to violence or expulsion from their neighborhoods by other Germans living nearby (Logan 2005; Barton 1996; Moses 2008b). Notwithstanding these challenges GEMAK managed some notablealisations including providing housing and education to refugee students while they awaitedpermits from our government authorities permitting themto continue their studies after arriving here(Moses 2008a). With respect totopolitics during World War II both Germany and Japan offered offers of citizenship through programs such as Jüdische Flüchtlingshilfe which encouraged refugees to settle permanentlyin Amerika – but only about one-fifth ever accepted these offers (Heinemann 2009) . As a result many salinas residents found themselves scattered among troops stationed throughout Amerika at any given time contributing little directlyto combat efforts save for occasional acts of vandalism or graffiti against American infrastructure(Hemmingway 2006). Most residents found work either doing menial tasks orchasing down rumors about military activity taking place outside their homes(Heinemann 2009; Mason2008b). During much of this time period social services were very limited either because funding was scarce or because agencies felt they didnot have jurisdiction over areas like resettlement activities so theyprovided support primarilyfor citizens who wanted it not those who needed it most(Avila 2007; Heinemann2009; Wolk 2006) . This lack o f social services likely contributed significantly toworkers choice not to take up Resettlement Servicesduring World War II since few expected any kindof assistance once hostilities ended- leaving many low income individuals vulnerable into poverty(Avila 2007) . After World War II however numerous agencies began operating within town limits offering comprehensive resettlement services such as food stampsand Medicaid along with health care programs such as free mammogramsand STD testing (Heinemann 2009) . Salina, Kansas was first settled in 1854. The town was named for Colonel John Salina, a United States pioneer who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1861, the town was renamed Salina after Kansas' own governor, James W. Salina. The post office remaining in operation until it merged with Wichita on July 1, 1907 served as the center of local life and commerce. By 1870, Salina had a population of only 150 people. However, by 1880 the community had grown to 2,500 people and by 1900 it had reached 5,000 people. The growth of the community came about because of its location at the junction of two railroads - one leading to Topeka and El Paso and another leading to Wichita - and its access to water resources which made it an important trade center during this time period.
