There is a long history of the Air Force being deployed to Salina, Kansas. The city was originally named Topeka after General James H. Wilson, Commander in Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I. The first military installation in Salina was an airfield established on land owned by the Ladd family in 1922. The airfield served as a training base for fighter pilots and bombers during World War II and later became home to the Salina Air National Guard Station. In 1957, the Air Force Base Annex was constructed on land adjacent to the original airfield site. This annex housed barracks, a mess hall, a library, and other associated infrastructure necessary for Air Force operations at Salina Airport. In 1992, construction began on Enterprise Park which would become home to one of America’s largest military parks. The park includes an Excess Land Store that allows members of the public access to surplus military equipment from acrossthe United States. Today, the USAF operates two squadrons at Enterprise Park-The 93rd Fighter Wing and 99th Tactical Airlift Wing. In 1954, President Dwight D Eisenhower authorized Operation Neptune’s Spear-the invasion of North Korea-and ordered American troops stationed in Japan to be moved to Korea peninsula so that they could participate in hostilities against communist forces there. On July 29th of that year US Marines landed at Inchon Harbor and were able quickly push northward up into North Korea where they encountered overwhelming resistance from what seemed like an unstoppable enemy force led by Kim Il Sung (later known as Stalin). Despite this daunting odds, elements of Marine units fought with dogged determination throughout what has come been called one of America’s most dramatic campaigns during World War II. By September 25th it had become clear that Kim Il Sung had successfully opposed all Allied efforts and his regime continued intact until he was overthrown by popular uprising some years later than he actually should have been due to his own incompetence rather than any significant fighting capability within his own forces-a point well illustrated by recent events such as Pyongyang’s sudden withdrawal from South Korean control following its successful deployment last month of a large armored column deep inside North Korea masquerading as part of Operation Thunderdome which ended without consequence thanks largely to Marine participation) After their victory againstKim il Sung’s regimeOperation Neptune Spearwas escalated into larger conflictreferredtoasthe Korean War becauseofthemassive scaleofdamageandcasualties sufferedbyboth sides.(althoughNorthKoreaclaimedthesuccessfuloperationChangwon)As hostilities intensifiedAirmenwere DeployedToSalinaAndTheCity Became AMajorMilitaryAreaBecauseOfItsIntenseAirActivity

It was placed under the operational control of the United States Strategic Defense Command on May 6, 1954. The USAF was redesignated as the Air Force on June 15, 1958. On February 17, 1961, TAC was combined with Headquarters ContinentalAir Command to form Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE).On July 17th, 1992 HQ USAFE disbanded and its assets were absorbed into Headquarters Allied Forces Europe which then became HQ European Command. Effective command and control between these two headquarters shifted from RAF Ramstein AFB Germany to RAF Mildenhall UK effective July 1st 1994
The Kansas Air National Guard's 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment deployed a gift history in Salina, Kansas on Dec. 4. The battalion, made up of Kiowa and Comanche helicopters from the 119th Airlift Wing at McConnell Air Force Base, delivered a Christmas tree to the local home of Sgt. David Shook and Ms. Shannon Macheda. The 1-ton tree was also donated by the unit's veteran chaplain, Rev. Tim Barnes.
Salina, Kansas is a town in Marshall County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Salina was founded in 1867 as a trading post on the Illinois-Kansas border. The town received its current name from General James Hall Salinas and his regiment of cavalry which invaded Mexican territory in 1872 during the American-Mexican War. As a result of this event, General Salinas's unit became known as "The Wildcats." The original Post Office building still stands today and is used as a museum. Salina has several notable landmarks including Mission Park which was built in 1911 to commemorate Mexico's victory over Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican–American War; State Capitol (1924), which replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire; and Hartnell Gymnasium which was built in 1957 and has since become one of the most popular venues for high school basketball games in the area.
