In 1907, an elementary school was built; it replaced an earlier school that had burned down in 1906. In 1922, the first high school opened in Prairie; it was replaced by Topeka High School after that community's annexation into Wichita-Leavenworth metropolitan area). Prairie, Kansas is a town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 609 at the 2010 census. Prairie is located on the Wichita River. The first settlement in Prairie was made in 1854 by David Rice and his family. The first post office in Prairie was established on December 25, 1855, and named for David Rice. The present elementary school building was built in 1903. In 1907 the original town square was developed and a new courthouse was built. A street naming ceremony took place on November 17, 2007 to commemorate 100 years of service to Prairie from seven different local leaders including Mayor Rick Gentry and Streetside Saloonkeeper Bill Hargrave. In 1925, the state of Kansas designated Dakota Township as part of Johnson County; however, it never materialized because no one wanted to move there because of the bad water quality and lack of jobs available outside Dakota Township. In 1951 Dakota Township became an independent municipality with its own government; however, it remains a part of Johnson County today because it has more residents than any other township within Johnson County combined. Prairie is home to several businesses that continue to contribute to the community economy: Kipling Farms Inc., Western Canada Tire Ltd., Empire Grain Elevators Company #1-3 & 4 (now Empire Grain), Arkansas Valley Dairy Co., Dakotashire Drug Store #2 & 3 (now Dakotashire Pharmacy), Prairie Advertising Agency Inc., and Prairie Baptist Church which serve as both spiritual leader/counselor as well as physical church services for residents of Johnson County.
