In 1984-1985 a new brigade headquarters was built at 6200 SW 78TH STREET in Wichita Falls which housed all units within 2 brigades simultaneously instead of having separate brigade headquarters for each brigade like prior to 1985 7. Prairie, Kansas is a small town in central Kansas on the Missouri River. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of Johnson County. The name Prairie was given to the area by General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War and discovered it while traveling through Indian Territory. The first settlers were men from what is now Nebraska and Iowa who went to live on a farm near present day Wichita in 1854. They named their new land Prairie after General Custer's discovery. The town site was chosen because of its location just upstream from where the Kansas City Railway crossed the river for shipping passengers and goods downstream to Topeka. The first school in Prairie was built in 1857 by Mr. Price and Mrs. Fenton, both of whom were teachers at Fort Leavenworth Military Academy until that school closed in 1861 due to budget cutbacks within the army brass band program which had been established at that academy as part of Continuous Army Development plan that Major Milburn started as Director of this program back in 1849! In 1865, Mrs Price donated land for a high school with classes starting on September 15th which would be known as First Presbyterian School (now Prairie High School). This high school also served as home for many years for students from Topeka until its closure following World War II when Prairie became an urban community! In 1907, Ladds Hardware opened up shop on Main Street - still serving today! This store was one of only two stores open when gasoline began being sold at pump stations throughout Johnson County! Ladds hardware was also one of few businesses located directly across from what is now known as First Presbyterian School (now Prairie High School) providing customers with quick access to fuel sources before they drove into downtown Topeka! After much discussion between clan members, it was decided that there should be an official name given to our fledgling township - "Prairie" came to be !!!!!!!!!
