The Prairie Rifles were a paramilitary organization in the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were a black rifle regiment that was formed from remnants of the disbanded American Volunteer Cavalry (AVC). The AVC was opposed to white control over the African-American population, and many of its members served in the Prairie Rifles. The regiment played an important role in suppressing Cherokee uprisings across Kansas during the 1885–1886 Cherokee War. After World War I, many of the members of the Prairie Rifles converted to Protestant Christianity and joined other military organizations. In 1924, most of them re-established themselves as a paramilitary group called The Knights Templar. Today, they are still active in rural areas throughout Kansas.

In the early 1800s, Prairie was a land of The Great Sioux Nation. This region was known for its grasslands and mountains, and for buffalo herds that roamed freely. Plains Indians hunted these animals for their meat and hides, and also gathered plants and flowers to use in traditional medicine. As the United States acquired more land in the Midwest, settlers began arriving in Prairie from all over America. Some of these people were farmers who bought or leased farmland from the local Indian tribe members. Others were miners who worked near the underground gas reserves that lay under Prairie country. After defeating the Sioux nation, General Custer decided to spend winter in this region as he prepared to assault Russian Fort McPherson on hostile Indian Territory. The battle resulted in several fatalities among both sides; however, Custer's forces managed to withdraw without losses before reaching their destination.
