Prairie, Kansas is a small town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,684 at the 2010 census. Prairie is located on the eastern edge of the great Plains region and is bordered to the south by the Wichita Mountains and to the north by Blue Mesa Reservoir. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The prairie region has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years. The first Europeans to visit Prairie were French traders in 1764 who named it after La Prairie (in New France), a point on the Missouri River about 20 miles east of present-day Prairie. The town was founded in 1854 by men from Dodge City, Kansas Territory as an agricultural trading post on what was then a wagon trail between Wichita and Topeka. In 1861, whenDouglas County was organized, Prairie became its capital. From 1865 until 1870 it served as seat of Gentry County; during this time it had a two-story frame courthouse with a library inside that still stands today. A new courthouse was built in 1870 but destroyed by fire three years later; it was replaced by another courthouse which still stands today. After being closed for many years due to lack of funding, rural school districts opened up Prairie in 1961 as their local government center; all district offices now are located there except for one which is located in Topeka proper. In 2002 Prairie lost its water supply when Great Western Railroad drained portions of Blue Mesa Reservoir for development purposes near ranching operations across from town limits
