Prairie, Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Prairie is known for its fertile farmland and wide variety of natural landscapes. The town was founded in 1874 by Settlers from Illinois and Nebraska. Prairie was named after a prairies in Illinois that the settlers saw while travelling through the territory on their way to Wichita. The prairies were located about south of present-day Prairie on the east side of Topeka River. When asked by one of the first enthusiasts for what he would name his new settlement, Drury proposed Prairie as a more localsounding option than either Kansa or Ottawa which both had been recommended to him as possible names for his new community. At first all but two residents chose "Prairie" as their initial name; only one man - James Ladd - changed it later to "Tribune". The first post office in Prairie was established in 1876, and remained open until it closed in 1902. In 1907, during an effort to increase business activity within the tiny community, a barbershop opened up inside the Methodist church which soon became known as "The Grotto". By 1909 there were six businesses functioning within Prairie: four stores and two hotels; one grocery store; one transportation company; three banks (the Citizens National Bank & Trust Company, First National Bank & Trust Company and Security Pacific Bank); and four churches (Methodist Church (1876), Presbyterian Church (1877), Baptist Church (1878) and Catholic Parish). There also existed at this time an agricultural society with seven members engaged in raising corn, beans, potatoes and other vegetables for consumption by themselves or their families or hogs for slaughtering purposes. In 1912 when Wichita became an incorporated city Limits were set forth around downtown Wichita including much of present day Prairie including most of current day Tarrant County on the east side of topeka river past Present day Grove City on west side where grain elevator now stands
