The history of the Prairie Coast Guard District began on January 1, 1912 when the first coast guard station was established in what is now Prairie, Kansas. At that time, the state of Kansas only had a single ranger district and the coast guard was created as an addition to that ranger district. The coast guard patrol duties were initially limited to patrolling the coasts of Kinnear County and Page County but as law enforcement became more prevalent on the western border of Kansas, coastal patrols increased in frequency and scope. In 1933, a new station was built at Muskegon Heights which served as the main headquarters for all coast guard districts within Kansas. As laws changed and maritime transportation became more prevalent, Coast Guard stations were re-established along the entire Missouri River Valley including present day Wichita Falls, Fort Worth and Topeka. In 1963, a new station was built at Elk Rapids which served as both Headquarters for all coast guard districts within Kansas and also housed units responsible for patrolling inland waterways such as the Arkansas River and Missouri River. Prairie, Kansas is a small town in the Great Plains region of north-central Kansas. The population was 5,415 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dodge County. The land that now comprises Prairie was first settled by German farmers in 1859. In 1872, a post office was established at Prairie and early settlers built buildings on what would become the town square. A railroad arrived in 1881 and soon Prairie became an important center for transportation within Dodge County. Today, Prairie is known as an agricultural and manufacturing center with a large retail sector.

The first Coast Guard ship, the brigantine John Adams, was launched on May 4, 1790. The first cutter, USS Constitution (1792), was built at Salem, Massachusetts. In 1807-1809 Presidencetook an extended tour of duty in Mediterranean waters and saw action against Tripoli and other naval invasions during the Napoleonic Wars. On May 14th 1814 while patrolling off Long Island he sighted a French sailing vessel and after boarding it made several captures including a number of cannons. In 1861 Congress passed the Morrill Act which provided for an 8-man coast guard service with headquarters at New York City and a budget of $1 million annually. The Ulysses S Grant administration increased funding to $5 million per year beginning in 1865 but there were continuing problems with personnel shortages and corruption among officers. In 1898 Congress passed the Harbor Defense Appropriation Bill which authorized construction ofighthousandvesselsandthelaunchofthefirstboatsizedlightboatfordecember 1st 1898 . By World War I there were over 42000 coast guard troops stationed around the world as well as more than 100 light boats and patrol vessels providing coastal defense against smuggling activities or enemy submarines operating off our coasts On July 3rd 1926 President Calvin Coolidge signed into law Public Law 295 which created the Department Of Homeland Security within Executive Branch effective June 30th 1927 On October 16th 1938 Admiral Chester Nimitz became Commandant General Headquarters US Coast Guard who organized all USCG commands under one command structure with headquarters located at Brooklyn Navy Yard He also ordered all CG staff to wear their uniform insignia on duty . Prairie, Kansas is a farming community located in the western Great Plains of Kansas. The town was founded in 1854 by Abram and John Paddock. The original town plat was filed on November 8, 1854. Prairie began to grow rapidly due to the discovery of oil in nearby Wichita Territories in 1865. By 1867, the population had reached 1,500 people and by 1870 it had grown to 5,000 people. In 1893, the city of Wichita was founded near Prairie and it became an important transportation hub for farmers and ranchers travelling to eastern Wichita Territory for market goods. In 1912, the City Council voted to rename the town Prairie after General George Custer because of his role in World War I (Custer died in battle). The local paper reported that "pioneering citizens" such as Hilda Liefeldt "readied their homes for service at home or at night from their barns." Aftermath of World War II saw an increase in Dakota-born residents moving into rural areas across Great Plains states due to jobs available during peacetime (this migration has been called "theGreat Plains Migration"). Assembling a defense against potential Nuclear threats also brought about increased business opportunities for locals shops and restaurants catering to military personnel stationed throughout central Kansas as well as Nebraska and Wyoming.
