The army gift history of Prairie, Kansas goes back to 1881. The first soldier to arrive in Prairie was Capt. John S. O’Neill, who arrived on July 4th, 1881. He and his unit were stationed at Fort Dodge for a year before being transferred to Fort Riley on November 1st, 1882. There they served until October 1886 when they were mustered out and returned home. In 1886 the first post office in Prairie was established and mail sent from Fort Dodge stoped here. In 1898, the fort was renamed Fort Leavenworth after General James MacArthur relieved Ulysses S Grant as Commanding Officer of all the Western United States. This location became an important military base where many battles were fought during the Spanish-American War including the Battle of San Juan Hill which took place on April 6th, 1899 near present day Wichita Falls, Texas. When World War I began in 1914, there were already over 100 soldiers living in Prairie by 1918. On December 12th, 1916 Rear Admiral George Fiske sailed into town with elements of Task Force 58 arriving from Great Lakes Naval Base for combat operations off Samar Island Philippines as part of World War I Expedition No 2 led by Rear Admiral Charles Eames which had been organized from various American warships operating inthe Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO). During their stay ashore Commodore Keyes met with Mayor Hobart Waddell and offered him a job creating a new city government with voting rights for citizens under one roof; this offer was accepted and on January 3rd 1917 plantation name “Prairie” was registered with the county recorder’s office fraudulently purporting to be unoccupied land belonging to Gila County Assessor Harry Buehler pursuant to a deed he had received while serving as an assessor for that county prior to his resignation effective September 15th 1912 due to ill health caused by yellow jaundice associated with lead poisoning caused by mining operations near Blanding City . The real name of this settlement is unknown but it may have been called “Hobart City” after then-Mayor Hobart Waddell who accepted Commodore Keyes offer

Prairie is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. Prairie is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first European to visit Prairie was Francisco de Montoya in 1699. He found it uninhabited and named it "Mesa de los Indios" ( Mesa of the Indians). In 1836, prospectors discovered coal and gold in the area and began mining. The townsites of Enterprise, Topeka, and Wichita were established around this time. The first post office was established in 1838 in Enterprise. By 1845, there were three towns: Prairie, Topeka, and Wichita. In 1850, a canal was built through Prairie to bring water from the Missouri River to Hutchinson; this contributed greatly to its growth as a town. In 1865–1866, settlers from Missouri arrived seeking land west of the Great Plains under the homesteading legislation passed during President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. They formed what is now called the Kansas Settlers Association and began purchasing land west of Wichita for $5 per acre ($ today). On July 10, 1870—the day before Kansas became an independent state—they founded Topeka as their new capital city; Prairie followed suit on July 12th following a referendum by residents of both cities over whether they should remain separate cities or merger into one single city under one governance structure with representation by elected officials from each municipality represented on a statewide level via councils composed of citizens living within each municipality only while also having some power delegated thereto such as zoning authority) The first post office opened at Prairie on November 15th 1870 after being established at Topeka two days earlier In 1907–1908 an electric railroad line connected these two cities making them linked by rail for the first time .
