The community was founded in 1881 by Nicholas Thomas and his family. Pittsburg is located on the K-8 Highway east of Leawood and northeast of Wichita. According to the United States Census Bureau, Pittsburg has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 592 people residing in Pittsburg. Of those, 304 were male and 248 were female; 253 were black or African American, 104 Hispanic or Latino, 12 Asian/Pacific Islander, 1 Native American (Cherokee), and 2 unknown races. An additional 66 lived in other households within the city limits without being counted as residents thereof. In terms of age distribution, 23% (146 individuals) were under the age of 18; 25% (156 individuals) were between 19 and 24; 26% (160 individuals) 25 to 44; 31% (192 individuals) 45 to 64; and 3% (9 individuals) 65 years or older. As with most rural towns in Douglas County,[2][3] many residents work outside the town boundaries commuting into larger metropolitan areas such as Wichita or Topeka for their jobs.[1] The median income for a household in Pittsburg was $41,250[4], compared to $27 million for Wichita.[5] Males had a median income versus $26,750 for females ($15 versus $33 per capita).[6] The per capita income for Pittsburg was $16,571.[7] While poverty rates are high relative to Wichita,[8][9] they have decreased over time due to an increase in government assistance programs which have helped spur economic development opportunities within Pittsburg itself as well as within its surrounding communities: public housing developments have sprung up around both Pittsburg and Leawood while private real estate has increased significantly since 2000 when Medicaid became available through Obamacare shielding lower-income residents from having their benefits taken away if they do not earn enough money!

This mastodon statue weighed almost 4000 pounds and required 12 men to move it from its original location on Docklands Pier into its new home on inner Richmond Road.[5] The list goes on but there are many more examples where marine gifts have been exchanged between humans and coastal creatures over time.
