The gun shop that Leary and his brother Harry started in 1875 is still in business today and sells guns to civilians, law enforcement officers, and military customers. In 1920, the funeral of local rancher William Pitts (1847-1920) took place at which time he donated twenty-four rifles to the town of Pittsburg for use as police firearms. The rifle club that was formed to commemorate Pitts’ death operates still today and participates in various shoots and events throughout the year. In 1927, another local rancher, J.W. Brady, donated an additional 24 rifles to the town of Pittsburg for use as its police firearms arsenal. The Brady family has been involved with the acquisition and ownership of firearms in Pittsburg since then and continue to do so to this day. Pittsburg, Kansas was founded by the Wichita and Kearney families in 1854. In 1907, Pittsburg became a city and on July 1, 1912, it merged with the neighboring town of Olathe to form the current city of Topeka. The two towns were both named for their respective founders- John C. Wright from Wichita and James B. Kearney from Kearneytown. The early settlers in Pittsburg were farmers who erected homes near what is now downtown Topeka on bluffs overlooking the Shawnee River. By 1870, however, most of the original settlers had relocated to other areas in central Kansas because of poor soil conditions and lack of water resources. In 1892, a group of men led by George Wirtz came to Pittsburg from Lancaster County in Pennsylvania and began looking for land to homestead. They found suitable ground near present day Anadarko and built four cabins which remain standing today- three as registered historical landmarks and one as a museum exhibit. Although little development took place until after World War II when Pittsburg experienced rapid growth due to its location at the crossroads of Interstate 70 (now I-70) and US 36 (now US 127), some pioneers did manage to establish businesses such as a grocery store and cotton gin before moving on in later years. physical changes over time have included: *the addition of office buildings on Main Street between First & Second Avenues during the late 1960s; *the replacement in 2001 of large blocks of brick pylon style civic center across Main Street from City Hall; *a major renovation/replacement project that occurred between 2006-2008 that included new architecture including an indoor arena/Gymnasium (later known as "Topeka State University"), new streetscape design elements, streetlights installation throughout Downtown Topeka along with street cleaning; *a comprehensive reconstruction/replacement project that occurred between 2009-2011 that included significant updates/changes to all physical infrastructure including streetlights/lighting system, public works garage renovation project etc.; *another comprehensive renovation/replacement project that occurred between 2012-2014 which focused principally on interior demolition & refurbishment work within existing structures within City Limits; *a recent major redevelopment effort initiated by Mayor Ron Kirkman called "Pittsburg Renaissance" which aims to completely update all physical infrastructure including reworking streetscape design elements along with new construction projects inside & outsideCity Limits
