In 1898, the Parsons Police Department became part of the newly formed United States Customs Service. Parsons, Kansas is a small town in Sherman County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Parsons is located on the eastern edge of the Wichita metropolitan area and is one of five municipalities in Wichita county. It lies within the Arkansas River valley and includes parts of the towns of Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. The first permanent settler in Parsons was John Witherspoon in 1854. Other early settlers included James Fenton and his family from England in 1857; Lewis Sutherlin arrived in 1860; Daniel McDonald from Illinois in 1865; J.B. Moffatt from Maryland in 1870; Isaac Snively from Vermont in 1875; Charles Aiken from Massachusetts in 1880; Augustus Sprague from Maine in 1886-87; George Ladd who arrived December 7, 1889 . In 1895 residents voted to incorporate as a town when they divided their land into blocks and sold it to six businessmen who agreed to donate $5 per acre for a town site. The first post office opened on May 6, 1896 under the name New Market by local contractor Henson Barnes with Parson as its initial name. The current name of Parsons was chosen by a vote at an election held November 9, 1922 after citizens selected it from a list provided by Secretary of State Hiram Maximoff as part of a contest for naming localities within Wichita county afterolute members (the other names being Topeka, Atchison, Santa Fe and Hutchinson). The original Post Office building which still stands today was built about 1915-16 using slave labor made available by Wernher Kappeldorffs munitions company located nearby on south Main Street. Residents have frequently changed their names over time due to various reasons such as location (Atchison became Topeka), industry (Parsons became munitions manufacturing center) or changing social mores (New Market became gayborhood). One example is Clyde Ridenhour who changed his name to Clyde Kingfish after he moved away from Parsons but kept his old job at Wernher Kappeldorffs munitions company where he worked until his retirement aged 98 years old! Another resident who has had many changes over time is Abe Beiler who started out working at what would now be called Walmart before moving into food service work at Parkway Towers which later morphed into Red Lobster before becoming home cooked restaurant Abe's Place which closed down around 2006 but left behind evidence that suggests this restaurant may have been open prior to that date! Parsons also played host to two annual fairs during its early years: one held annually on Memorial Day Weekend 1920″21 & another on July 4th every year since 1951 known as "Oklahoma Independence Day." This event served as an opportunity for locals and businesses nearby to display items related thereto including flags flown at half mast throughout most of Wichita county during these days while attendance topped 50% each year resulting in some estimated economic impact totaling several thousand dollars both times! Today's largest Independence day parade takes place annually around Thanksgiving weekend along US Highway 169 near downtown Wichita making it once again an opportunity for locals and businesses close by to displaying items related thereto including flags flown at half mast throughout most of Wichita county while attendance tops 50% each year resulting in some estimated economic impact totaling several thousand dollars both times!
Parsons was founded in 1854 by a group of farmers. The town was named for George Parsons, the first postmaster. In 1865, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1907.
