The first Naval facility in Parsons was built in 1929, and the current Naval station was established in 1951. In 1969, the Navy opened the world's largest naval air station at Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1992, Admiral John Richardson became the first U.S. Admiral to lead all three services--Navy, Marines and Coast Guard--in simultaneous ceremonies at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio. In 1905, during World War I, Rebecca Ann Nesse donated land to build a navy shipyard on her property between Haskell and Chatfield Streets in Wichita Falls. This yard built eight ships for the United States Navy: USS Monitor (1895), USS Olympia (1901), USS Argonaut (1902), USS Tulsa (1903), USS Pascagoula (1905),USS Quincy (1896) andUSS Baltimore (1910). After World War II ended with America's entry into World War III, work continued on new warships at this shipyard until it closed its doors for good in 1970 after producing only four ships total-the last being the guided missile destroyer USS Porter(1991). Parsons also played a significant role during World War II as an epicenter for munitions production due to its location along Route 81W which connected Manhattan with Fort Worth via Wichita Falls Boulevard. During that time there were twenty-six munitions manufacturing plants across western Kansas operated by fifteen companies including Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s Hutchinson plant which made tanks and artillery pieces; Kokomo Arsenal produced rockets; Marshall Chemical Company manufactured TNT; Union Carbide Company manufactured pesticides; Republic Ammunition Manufacturing Company made ordnance ammunition such as shells and bombs; Armourtex produced T-barrel shotguns... all making their way into American arsenals throughout WWII thanks to generous gifts from local business owners or individuals who believed that war should be fought using American resources rather than imported materials or products from abroad
