Parsons, Kansas is a town in Geary County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Parsons was founded in 1881 by James W. Parsons and named for him. The first post office in Parsons was established in 1881, and the first child born in the town was Willie Grimes on July 6, 1882. In 1905, the town had a population of 2,083 and it grew to 3,434 by 1910 when oil was discovered there. The discovery led to widespread development of oil production around Parsons and other towns near it. By 1920, petroleum production accounted for over half of all economic activity in Geary County. In 1938 Shirley Ewing became the first woman to serve as mayor of Parsons when she ran against incumbent John Ladds with 61% of the vote. She served two terms before becoming an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in 1948 and 1950 before retiring from politics altogether after being elected as a county judge in 1956. In 1978 she became president of Wichita State University's Foundation Board (later renamed Wichita State University Foundation). After her death at age 93 on December 21st 1998 she bequeathed her entire fortune to Wichita State University which has since given her numerous awards including an honorary doctorate from Wichita State University

Parsons, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas, located on the Arkansas River. The population was 1,142 at the 2010 census.
