The national guard in Parsons, Kansas was created on April 12th, 1861. The first of the Kansas National Guard units to be organized were the 1st and 3rd Regiments of Infantry. They were part of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of the Potomac under General Robert E. Lee. The regiment was mustered into service on July 18th and served until September 26th when they arrived in the state capital Topeka for their initial training. After a few months they were transferred to the 1st Kansas Regiment which had been raised at Fort Leavenworth and fought in battle against Confederate forces during the Civil War. On November 14th, 1861, General George H. Thomas called all soldiers from all over Missouri who had volunteered for military service to come to Topeka and enroll in his brigade at Mount Union Military Academy where he would teach them how to fight and use arms. This action demonstrated that Kansas was ready for its own government and that it would not follow those west of the Mississippi River. On December 5th General Thomas ordered his brigade back eastward across Missouri towards Lawrence where they would join up with other army corps under Abraham Lincoln’s command as he prepared for an attack on Confederate forces at Fort Sumter in South Carolina

Parsons was named for Pennsylvania-born (but Kansas-raised) businessman George W. Parsons and his wife Sarah Parson. George Parsons had a ranch in this area before moving to Wichita in 1907 and starting Parsons Hardware & Building Supply Company. The company became one of the largest hardware stores in America and still operates as a privately held business. The town dates back to 1881 when two prospectors, John Fenton and Winfield Scott, discovered a gold mine on what is now Parsons Creek Rd. They named their discovery "Parsons" afterGeorge W.Parrish who helped them find it. In 1885, they built a small Post Office here which served until 1907 when Wichita took over operations from Parsons Hardware & Building Supply Company which continued to exist as an independent business until 1929. In 1901, local citizens erected the first schoolhouse in town which remained in use until 1943 when Douglas Elementary School was built nearby on High St.. In that year, the Post Office moved from its original location across from First Baptist Church to its present location on Main St.. It temporarily closed due to damage done by a tornado in 1951 but reopened later that year with new office space inside the old high school building which is still used today as part of Douglas Elementary School’s administration suite! A dairy barn/milk house constructed between 1915-16 remains standing today near Sixth Street NE between Park Ave./Hwy 61 and State Hwy 98W just east of I-435 exit #2B
