Parsons was founded in 1881 by John Parsons and his family. In 1907, the community merged with Hutchinson to form Hutchinson-Parsons. The community name originated from John Parsons's father-in-law's name of "Parsons" ( Meaning "Land of Parsons"). The first post office in Parsons opened on July 10, 1881. The first settlers were farmers who arrived from Illinois and Missouri. By 1890, the population had grown to over 100 people and a school had been built. A water tower was built in 1903 and a sawmill was started in 1907. The town became an incorporated village on April 16, 1912. In 1916 two oil wells were drilled in nearby Blue Hill and natural gas reserves were discovered which led to the development of the town's economy around this time. During World War II, Parsons served as an airbase for training fighter pilots for the U.SAAF Training Command based at Great Lakes Naval Air Station (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). For years after World War II it remained an agricultural center with many small businesses including one that made hand grenades out of lead shot used by American troops during World War I
