Parsons, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. It is located on the western edge of the Great Plains about 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Wichita and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Topeka. Parsons was platted in 1854 by Major George Parsons, who named it for his friend and neighbor, Sir John Parsons. The post office was established in 1857, and became a incorporated town in 1865. The population was 893 at the 2010 census. The community began as a farming village with only one store and two residences. In 1907, an important change occurred when a railroad arrived to provide transportation to other parts of the country. In 1927, the first high school opened its doors; it served as the primary educational institution for local children until 1964 when Topeka closed its public education system. Parsons was a small town in Kansas during the late 1800s. The town was founded by James Parsons and his family in 1881. The town grew until it had a population of around 350 people in the early 1900s. In 1907, the Parsons family sold their land to make way for the Wichita-Overland Railroad. The railroad built a depot at Parsons and started shipping goods from Parsons to Wichita. By 1912, the town had shrunk to just twenty-five people and its economy had collapsed. In 1916, the Wichita-Overland Railway closed down, leaving Parsons with no regular sources of income. As a result, many residents left the town and it fell into decline. In 1947, some local residents decided to start a community Supported Living program in order to help revitalize the town. In 1984, some members of the Parsons community decided that they wanted to keep their history alive and started digitizing all of their old records. They soon realized that there were quite a few things that remained unknown about Parsons during its time as an agricultural center. So they began researching how to preserve these records so that they could continue being used as part of Parsons history education program outside of the Town Hall building currently home to The Kansas Historical Society (KHS). In 2006, KHS partnered with nearby Topeka State University (TSU) in order to create an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Parsons - A Milltown on Wheels” which focused on exploring how railroads impacted life in Parsons throughout its years as an agricultural center; from 1881 until 1917 when it went bankrupt due largely to World War I truncating demand for goods from Europe
