Overland Park, Kansas is a city in County Kansas, in the United States. The population was 362 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita– Harvey metropolitan area. The town was founded by Mormons in 1854 as Cedar Hill. A post office called Cedar Hill was established in 1858, and it changed its name to Overland Park on October 1, 1871, after General Phil Kearny's overland route from Mexico City to Salt Lake City passed through the area. The first store and school were built there in 1872-3. In 1907 Overland Park became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five councilmen; it had no voting power until 1912 when it joined the Wichita/ Harvey metropolitan area. In 1954 Overland Park annexed portions of Clay County to make up its total population size of 565,000 citizens—the largest annexation ever made by an American city (it would be surpassed only by Buffalo, New York). Since then Overland Park has grown rapidly through annexations of other townships and counties: Hays (2007), Morris (2008), Atchison (2009), Wyandotte (2010) and Pottawatomie (2011). In 2013 Overland Park annexed Kiowa County which had a population of just under 100,000 people living within its borders as well as parts of Grant and McPherson Counties that also have populations above 100,000 residents but are not included within the city limits of Overland Park proper.

Overland Park was founded in 1872 by citizens of Indian Territory who had come west during the Mexican–American War. On November 6, 1872, Overland Park became an independent municipality with a population of 50 residents. In 1907 it became one of three cities in Johnson County which were consolidated with Topeka into one entity. The first mayor was A.H. Butler and first City Councilmember Wm Copley served from 1907 until 1914 when Wm Sowers took office after being elected as Mayor pro tempore from Topeka due to Fenton's death that year prior to taking office. On December 1st 1915 Overland Park lost its charter as part of an expansion plan for Johnson County which also included Lawrence and other towns south of Topeka withinJohnson County limits becoming reincorporated into Topeka or annexed by that town Limits later that year as well making Overland Park once again an unincorporated community outside Johnson County boundaries until its annexation into Topeka on January 1st 1956 pursuant to Kansascity Act No 10-1956 et al.. In 1959 Overland Park voters passed an ordinance establishing itself as a municipal jurisdiction separate from Topeka with its own police department and fire department within two years followed by incorporation intoTopeka on January 1st 1960 becoming only the second city ever incorporated in Kansas after Wichita (the first having been Osborne). Since joining Topeka we have:•done extensive remodeling/updates including new administrations Main Library (opened in 1966), Pratt Community College (opened in 1978), St Joseph’s Catholic School (opened in 1984), Sprinkle Mall (dedicated in 1990)•added more than 20 acres adjacent to current downtown core including: Midtown Plaza; Kipling Corporate Center; Ford Field; Tomahawk Golf Course; etc.—including surrounding neighborhoods such as North Olathe; Clarendon Hills; Shawnee Mission—amenities now include high quality public parks including Regency Gardens off Truman Road near FordField while still maintain[ing] much original character such as single family homes along Elm Street between Prospector Drive & Woodlawn Avenue which remain today essentially unchanged since 1860—and vehicular access is available via Highland Boulevard just east of downtown core while still maintaining many original street names such as “Prairie View” & “Laramie”
