The Marine Corps has been in the United States since 1898. In 2003, marine officers were stationed at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba following revelations of illegal U.S.- Cuban interactions while serving there as intelligence analysts under cover of being soldiers assigned to support Operation Neptune’s Spear which was an invasion of Afghanistan by Coalition forces seeking revenge for 9/11 attacks on New York City . A period of rapid growth followed, but by 1940 Overland Park had shrunk to just over 2,000 people. In 1865, General O. Montgomery took command of Union forces in Overland Park and began the process of moving the Kansas capital from Topeka to downtown for the new state government. He selected a site on First Street between Downing and Lawrence Streets, east of the present-day capitol complex. The original town hall was built there in 1867, but it burned down in 1902. A new town hall was built on First and Elm Streets in 1915, but it also burned down. The current capitol building was completed in 1927 and is located on 2nd Street between Independence Avenue and Market Square.
