Overland Park, Kansas is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Overland Park was a group of Mormons who came to Independence, Missouri in 183. The Mormon pioneers were not interested in farming and decided to build their own town instead. A post office was established at Overland Park on November 25, 1838, by order of the territorial government. In 1847 the railroad was built through Johnson County and Overland Park became an important center for transportation. The city's first store opened in 1850 and its first library in 1861. In 1865 Overland Park became the seat of Johnson County when it was organized from parts of Lawrence and Shawnee counties. Overland Park has had several expansions since its founding as a town: In 1907 it annexed portions of Wilburn Heights and Westside which made it one of the largest cities within Johnson County by population (it still remains one). In 1915 Overland Park annexed much larger portion of south side called Midwestern City which again made it one of the biggest cities within Johnson County by population (it still remains one). In 1932 over 100 businesses were annexed into Overland Park making it one of the most conglomerated communities during that time period across all American towns/cities combined
