Overland Park, Kansas is a city in the United States. The population was 66,819 as of the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Kansas and the third-largest city in Missouri after Kansas City and St. Louis. Overland Park is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Overland Park was James Murtagh, who arrived on May 10, 1854, with his family from County Clare, Ireland. In 1857, General David Hogg established Fort Hogg east of present-day Overland Park to protect settlers travelling over the Santa Fe Trail from Native American attacks. In 1860 Ozark County was organized and Overland Park became a part of it; however, it remained within Shawnee County until 1907 when that county was split into two parts – one including Overland Park and the other including Lawrence – creating Wichita County. Overland Park, Kansas is a city in northeastern Kansas. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Johnson County. It is located on the border of Johnson County and Overbrook Township, in Sedgwick County. The first settler in what is now Overland Park was Daniel Boone in 1813. The town was platted in 1838 by John Smedley and named after General James Kansa, who had been killed at a Battle of Crossroads during the Mexican–American War. In 1848, Overland Park became the county seat for Sedgwick County; it remained so until 1907. In 1861, Confederate General John Custer was planning to cross the state line into Missouri to join his forces when he learned that Union troops were stationed at Fort Leavenworth south of Topeka. He marched his brigade through Overland Park on October 15 and 16 to relieve Fort Hays; however, because Union troops were nearby he did not reach Missouri before surrendering on October 20. Kansas City was founded as an agricultural center due to its location on both sides of the Arkansas River (northwest corner) and its access to markets east of Wichita (southwest corner). The city's growth began with settlement by farmers from eastern Indiana and Illinois who arrived during the Great Famine of 1847–50; many of these newcomers returned home during recovery periods following those timespan's natural disasters such as crop failures or harsh weather conditions that led to famine elsewhere in North America.
