Overland Park, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas, located on the east side of the Arkansas River. The population was 23,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1855 by pioneer James Bowie and his family as Overland Park Township, south of present-day Wichita. In 1860, it became a county seat of Wilson County; and in 1867 it became a full-fledged city under Mayor John Smeaton. The population reached 25,000 by 1910; but during World War I and World War II its population decreased because most people worked in nearby Wichita or served in military duty overseas. The city's resurgence began after becoming an auto dealership center; thereafter its economy has been based largely on service industries such as health care and education (including two medical schools), government employment, light industrial production (including a plastics plant), and agriculture (the largest employer being cattle). In September 2007, Overland Park City Council voted to annex adjacent Jefferson County due to protests from residents about plans for new development there that would cross their lots line - including a Walmart store - without prior consent from those who live there

Kansas was the first state to admission massachusetts in 1854. The town of Overland Park, Kansas was founded in 1854 by James P. Richardson and John H. Geary as a farming community on the east side of what is now Wichita County. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the overland trail, and by 1860 it had a population of 500. In 1867, Overland Park became the capital of Kansas and its first mayor was James K. Polk. Overland Park experienced rapid growth during the early years of the 20th century due to its location on Interstate 70 and its role as an agricultural center for central Illinoisans moving westward into Kansas Territory. By 1920, Overland Park had a population of 10,000 and was home to three high schools, two newspapers, a bank, a post office, and several churches. The city annexed parts of south Wichita County in 1924 and became known as "The City of Overland Park." During World War II, Over land Park played an important role in providing munitions storage for the military wing at Topeka Naval Air Station (now Mid-Continent Airport). The city also developed significant industrial activities such as aluminum smelting from local hillsides and aircraft production from nearby Hutchinson Airport (now Hutchinson Regional Airport). In 1959 Over land Park voters passed an ordinance establishing their own municipal government which lasted until 1976 when it was replaced by Topeka's current city government with provisions for residential area zoning laws that remain in effect today
The Overland Park, Kansas community began as a small town in 1854. The first post office was established in 1856, and the first township was organized in 1860. In 1871, the town of Overland Park was incorporated. The population of Overland Park reached 1,500 by 1880. Growth slowed during the Great Depression, but resumed after the stock market crash of 1929. The economy declined during World War II, but rebounded following the war's end. By 1970,Overland Park had grown to 6,000 residents. Growth again slowed during the 1990s due to increased commuting and economic development outside of Kansas City. However, growth has resumed since 2000 and is projected to exceed 10,000 people by 2020.
