Overland Park, Kansas is a city in southern Kansas, United States. The population was 95,814 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in the state after Wichita. The town of Overland Park was founded by David S. Overly and his family on October 18, 1858, when they arrived from Illinois to claim land that had been part of the Shawnee Nation. The townsite grew rapidly and by 1860 it included a dozen buildings and fifty-six people. That year, David Overly donated 320 acres (128 ha) to the town for use as a park and school site. In 1863, over forty residents pooled their money to purchase 640 acres (252 ha) east of the present-day downtown area for an agricultural college and Agricultural Experiment Station; today's Missouri University of Science & Technology occupies this land. In 1907, Overland Park became one of two cities in Kansas City County; the other being Blue Hill. On November 5, 1907 voters approved a charter amendment authorizing incorporation as a city without having to apply to county government for approval; this action set off an antitrust lawsuit that led to Overland Park's current form as an independent municipality with its own mayor and council. On July 1st 1915 voters passed an ordinance creating home rule within city limits; this enabled Overland Park Mayor Wm Jernigan to establish ordinances specific to its unique cultural history while still compliance with Kansas City County regulations which limited local self-government abilities
The Overland Park area was first settled in 1854 by the Kansas Territorial Legislature. The town of Overland Park was platted in 1857, and became a railroad center. In 1870, the Kansas Pacific Railway reached Overland Park, and began to sell goods from its main line at the Town Hall. The town started to grow rapidly, and by 1880 it had a population of over 10,000 people. By 1905, Overland Park had become one of the most popular communities in America for vacationers. During World War I, Overland Park served as an airfield for American forces. In 1933, the city limits were expanded to include present-day west Wichita County. The city annexed portions of Hutchinson County in 1938 and 1939; during World War II these annexations included much of east Wichita County as well. Overland Park is home to two universities: Oral Roberts University and Wichita State University; three shopping malls: One Eye Mall (which opened in 1959), Midtown Center (opened in 1984), and Westlife Centre (opened in 1988). It also hosts many other businesses and office towers including McConnell Place mall (opened in 1985) and Social Security Administration Building (built 1925).
