The Olathe National Guard was established in 1907 as the Kansas Territorial Militia. The unit was active during World War I and II, and most notably served in the 1946 battle of Brandenburg Gate. In October 2003, the Olathe National Guard merged with the Kansas Army National Guard to form a single unified force. On September 1, 2006, all units within the new national guard were amalgamated into one organization under the name of The Olathe National Guard.

Olathe, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Olathe County. The population was 27,046 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita– Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site of present-day Olathe was first settled by Native Americans in 1795 as a trading post on the Arkansas River between what are now Wichita and Topeka. A small town called Lawrence was founded nearby in 1827, but it declined due to lack of trade and competition from Olathe. The town's only connection with central Kansas was its location on a branch line connecting Lawrence and Independence, Missouri. In 1881, voters passed an ordinance creating a municipal government for Olathe under which it became its own municipality with a Mayor and City Council. In 1907, when Wichita merged into Topeka, Olathe became Topeka's second city after Lawrence had been disbanded. The merger created some tension between the two cities over property rights; however, topography and other factors eventually led to this discrepancy being resolved peacefully through arbitration rulings from both cities' commissioners (the "Commissioner's Court"). From 1907 until 1961, Olathe was also one of Topeka's 12 boroughs (). On April 14th, 2003 KCTV5 aired an investigative report about racism in Topeka that has since become known as "The Color Line". This report exposed rampant racism within Topeka government circles dating back to at least the early 1990s when then-City Manager Donnie Barnes refused to hire black workers because he felt they would compete unfairly with white employees After years of protests by activists group Nonviolent Action Everywhere (NAAF), local officials finally agreed to fire Barnes in 2006 following public outcry; however they reinstated him two months later after admitting they erred in their decision not to fire him originally On May 8th 2006 seven African American community members were arrested during an illegal protest against Mayor Donnie Barnes outside his office building while he was meeting with business partners

These days, the Guard enjoys a rich history that can be traced back to 1792 when President George Washington ordered 10,000 men from New York City to join the Continental army. Over time, the National Guard has undergone many modifications in order to reflect changing times and improve its capabilities. In 1821, Congress passed an act designating the National Guard as a military reserve force composed of citizens from all states who were not yet members of the U.S. military. The following year, President James K. Polk created 1 million Guardsmen in addition to Regular Army troops for use during wartime on home soil and abroad. By 1850, there were over 20 million Guardsmen in existence across America and Canada. During World War II, both American and British forces relied on the National Guard for assistance including airlift operations and amphibious assaults ashore against Japanese positions near Pearl Harbor (1941). After hostilities ended, many Guardsmen chose civilian careers or served in various other government roles until 1991 when they again rejoined their unit-employing population of over 27 million today!
