Olathe, Kansas is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 16,545 at the 2010 census. Olathe is the second most populous city in Sedgwick County after Wichita. The city is located on the edge of the Wichita metropolitan area and it is bordered by Topeka to the east and north, Lenexa to the south and west, and Overland Park to the southwest. The first permanent settler in what would become Olathe was James Mclntyre in 1855. He founded a small town called McClellan on his farm near present day Olathe. In 1857, John Prentice established a post office at McClellan with nine mail sacks per month from St. Joseph's Missionary Society. In 1860, Prentice donated land to form what would become Olathe village site which he named after his wife Fannie (Fletcher). The first post office opened on July 15th of that year under the name "Fletcher". In 1870, Oliver Harvey organized a school district for Sedgwick County and donated land for a public school building which was completed in 1872. On September 1st of that same year, Harvey set up an irrigation system comprising twenty-six miles of pipeline for irrigation of five thousand acres of farmland within East Central Kansas Agricultural Company limits - this was one of several early innovations associated with Harvey including water rights legislation which became law in 1889 as part of Pershing Act number 715 (). In 1882–1884 there were two lynchings in Kiowa County - both involving men accused or convicted of vagrancy or rustling - this got people’s attention and made headlines throughout America (). On October 2nd1882 three black men were hanged by white supremacists as retribution for an earlier beating they had received from whites () during an escort mission (). This event generated national coverage (), followed by mobs lynching three other blacks – one killed while trying to escape – during similar incidents throughoutKansas () until finally comprehensive anti-lynching laws were passed nationally following another high profile case involving Joshua Lumbert () on December 5th 1888 (). A new major railroad line was built through central KS during these years − Western Union Railway (WUR)− making Olathe one of its fastest growing cities (). Olathe, Kansas is the most remote city in America. It is located on the edge of a Dust Bowl-era farming region that was abandoned after the discovery of oil and gas in nearby Kansas City. Olathe was founded in 1873 by Presbyterians seeking to establish a new home for their people near the center of the country. The town slowly grew into a metropolitan area, becoming one of the largest in America by 1945. Today, Olathe is an affluent city with a diverse population that includes many students from around the world. The city's economy is based largely on agriculture and manufacturing, but it also has some significant businesses including Microsoft and PepsiCo.
Olathe is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Olathe is part of the Wichita–Lawrence Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to what is now Olathe were two families from Illinois who came through the area in 1854 and founded a farm called Valentine Station on the present site of Olathe. In 1875, the City of Olathe was organized and named for General David Hogg (1795-1868), an officer in the Mexican-American War and founder of Wichita's first school district. Hogg had earlier donated land to build a town on which he hoped to establish Wichita as an agricultural center like Des Moines, Iowa. The following year, when Hogg learned that his gift would not be used to build his town but rather become part of Johnson County, he decided to donate additional land east of his original donation so that Olathe could be established as its own municipality. In 1880, two years after incorporation, Olathe annexed nearby Black Mesa while still subject to Johnson County jurisdiction. In 1907, Olathe became one of thirty-six municipalities in Kansas that joined together as the State government authorized by Acts Of Congress approved August 3rd (77 Statutes 8) known as "The Municipal League OfKansas." This organization promoted municipal self-government throughout Kansas under one roof with a common goal: creating more efficient public services within each community while fostering cross-cultural cooperation among its members. The League's first president was Mayor John Whelan of Topeka. At its peak membership numbered over 1,000 municipal officials from all fifty states and D.C.. Municipal self-government ordinances were passed through local legislatures throughout the state until 1979 when state statute reclassified municipals into "cities" pursuant to then Governor Frank Keating's Executive Order No.: 532/79 which defined cities as "towns or villages having more than 6 thousand inhabitants". By 1991 there were only 36 cities remaining across all 50 US states plus D.C.. Olathe has experienced many changes since it formed as an incorporated city in 1907 including annexations by other towns until it had 24 species total annexation between 1907 and 2013; three times during this time period it lost residents due to prohibition; increased industrial development brought about loss jobs; however since 2007 when alcohol began flowing freely into town again much has changed such as new housing developments being built near old businesses
