Olathe, Kansas is a city in Russell County, Kansas, United States. The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census. Olathe is part of the Wichita-Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Olathe were white men from Dakota Territory. They named their town after a small knoll on the east side of the Arkansas River where they found a rich coal mine. Coal mining became an important industry in early Olathe and other towns in Russell County, as it provided employment for many people during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1892, Olathe was platted as a town by Judge George Davenport Buell. It grew rapidly due to its location and coalitional support from neighboring towns such as Leavenworth and Overland Park. In 1907, Olathe became an independent city with full voting rights due to its annexation by Wichita in 1912. Today, Olathe is one of America's most vibrant cities with over three million residents – primarily because of its strong economy which has been built on manufacturing and services sectors dating back to the nineteenth century
