Olathe, Kansas is a city in Wyandotte County, Kansas, United States. The population was 979 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Newton, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Olathe is located on the eastern edge of the Wichita Hills and on the Arkansas River just east of Topeka. The first European to visit what is now Olathe was Father Gabriel de la Cueva in 1536 when he sighted the Arkansas River from a bluff overlooking present day Olathe. He noted that its banks were "hills so sheer and high" that he could not believe his eyes and proposed naming it after Our Lady of Guadalupe which he had seen while journeying through Mexico City en route to Mexico City Cathedral. It wasn't until 1873 that Kansas Territory was organized as Wyandotte County by territorial congressmen George Hearn and James McIntosh with Olathe being one of nine towns within Wyandotte County served by a committee appointed to select a site for county seat. The town's choice was based upon abundant water supplies available nearby which would make possible an agricultural rather than purely manufacturing economy given present-day Topeka's isolation from other parts of Kansas; this assessment turned out to be accurate as Olathe rapidly became one of the most important cities in RepublicanKansas during its formative years following statehood in 1907. The growth of oil production throughout much Western Kansas during World War I led to an increase in transportation demands for goods arriving at or going intoOlathe including truckloads coming down Buffalo Creek carrying feedstock for local refineries; these demands consequentially created waves of new construction along then current US 36W/Highland Ave.; contemporary aerial views demonstrate how rapidly area development took place without any prior planning or zoning regulations thereby typicalizing today's suburban sprawl patterns across much rural America Revised Official Plan dated 1957 depicted only portions currently residing within city limits while prior plans depicting areas lying entirely within city limits have been lost or destroyed
