The Newton, Kansas Naval Militia was activated by the Navy in 1912 as a result of the Spanish-American War. The unit was disbanded in 1920 but reactivated again in 1932 as part of the American Defense Program. It was redesignated as the 1st Naval Militia Regiment on November 1, 1942 and it continued to be mobilized through World War II untilactivated on September 15, 1946. The regiment (-2nd Naval Militia Regiment) served until 1978 when it was decommissioned and its assets were sold to the Wichita Independent School District for use as a high school football field. In 1912, President Woodrow Wilson created an organization called the National Defense League to provide support for naval militia units deployed abroad. On October 9th, 1916, Congress passed an act authorizing navy warships and marines stationed at Guantánamo Bay Cuba to become troop ships and be under Navy command while their owners awaited orders from Washington D.C.. This became effective on December 12th 1906 when naval reservists from New York City boarded USS Monitor at Norfolk Virginia Beach and sailed her back into port after completing repairs following an engine failure off Cuba. On February 10th 1922 Captain James A Tillman (USN) led a force of 137 soldiers/ sailors from USS Constitution (CV-14) against a band ofBoxcar Pirates who had hijacked two steamers near Key West Florida. Tillman's successful action resulted in lasting notoriety for the USN which helped improve United States maritime security during World War II; leading eventually to America becoming sole superpower

The town’s economy depends heavily on agriculture, which includes corn, hay, wheat, soybeans and other crops. There are also several small businesses in town; some notable ones include First National Bank and Kwik Trip convenience store. Elementary schools intown are rated “very good” by state standards while high school students attend schools within 10 miles of downtown Newton (although there are no attempts to provide services beyond that distance). Newton is home to three churches: First Baptist Church, Second Baptist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church/Church of Christ Scientist School District #1A. These churches operate daycare centers as well as ministries such as church planting and outreach work through social service organizations such as local housing authority assistance programs or food pantries/doublespeak soup kitchens/libraries for low-income families living below poverty lines or those with special needs.
