Newton, Kansas is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. Newton is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Newton was first settled in 1854 by John Newton and his family. The name "Newton" was derived from an incident during the Mexican-American War when General Sam Houston's army discovered a cache of cannons and rifles that had been abandoned by Texas Rangers. Newton was one of five towns founded in Johnson County on May 1, 1854 by Wiley Post and others who had driven off the Texan invaders at Palo Alto Hill near Wichita. The town site was located on what is now Pawnee Road about southwest of present-day Newton Center (the eastern edge of which is within the boundaries of Wichita). It originally consisted of only a few log cabins; however, within weeks or months most residents had erected buildings including a store and post office. A millstream ran through the town and water power for mills were obtained from nearby hills. In addition to farming, cattle raising also became a important aspect of early life in Newton while two cotton ginners operated in this community until 1865 when they went outof business due to competition from more efficient machines developed in Kentucky." On December 12th, 1860 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Topeka with 8 forces commanded by Major General Orville Ewing disembarking therefrom his steamer "Hiawatha". After spending several days ashore he retired upriver to Fort Riley where he left behind supplies for his troops wintering along the Arkansas River northward as part of Jubal Early's Confederate army marching through central Kansas following its victory overUnion general Winfield Scott at Monterrey on November 26th that year." After Grant's departure most people turned their attention back to farming but some young men among them decided to try their hand at law enforcement which soon took off with Justice Samuel J Smith being appointed first deputy sheriff." In 1870 George W Cramer moved into town formed what would become known as Cramer & Sons mercantile business importing goods such as flour and tobacco from Illinois before becoming credit broker/dealer with offices downtown starting around 1875."Cramer also served six terms as Mayor beginning around 1907 before losing re-election bid in 1911.""He died suddenly after lunch on Thursday January 2nd 1915 at age seventy seven leaving four children bearing him grandchildren""Montezuma High School offers graduate level education which has allowed Newton students to compete against other universities across America.""

Newton was a town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. Newton was laid out by the Richardson brothers in 1879 and named for Newtons discovery of calculus in 1687. The town was established on the east side of the Arkansas River, about two miles northeast of its present location. In 1889, Newton became the county seat of Riley County. The first post office at Newton was opened in 1881; it served as an outpost for stagecoaches carrying passengers to Topeka. The first store at Newton was built in 1886 and soon became a popular destination for customers traveling from Wichita and other nearby towns. By 1912, Newton had a population of 120 residents and six businesses. That year, the new courthouse replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by a tornado that year. In 1916, during World War I, Newton formed an all-volunteer military band known as "The Wildcats". The band played patriotic songs throughout the war and performed at various events such as parades and funerals. After the war ended, most of the members of "The Wildcats" left to form their own band; however, several original members kept their roles in the town's community life until their deaths in 1927 and 1948 respectively. In 1951, when Riley County merged with Geary County to form Johnson County,[2] Newton ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality within Johnson County but continued to operate as a post office until it closed on November 30th 1968.[3] From its closure until 1969 when it reopened under name "Newton", no regular mail service operated through what is now North Newton Township (and ZIP code 62002). Today North Newton Township officially refers only to itself since there are no other inhabitants living within its boundaries - even though many people believe that if one lived there then they too would be considered "Newtonians".[4][5][6][7] According to one estimate,[8] around 350 residents still live within central part of town limits which includes today's business district including North Newton High School Campus;[9] although some recent evidence suggests this number may actually be much lower due primarily to travel distance required for work outside those boundaries[10]. It should also be noted that physical remnants currently remaining from pre-1969 days such as buildings located along Main Street between Third Avenue South (now White Road) and Fourth Avenue South date back over 100 years[11],[12], making any claims that large numbers or significant civilian infrastructure has dissipated or disappeared altogether impossible without more definitive evidence
