On December 1, 1865, Captain James Burt's United States cavalry regiment derailed a train east of Newton while on their way to Fort Riley for supplies and burned down some homes along the way in what is now known as "The Train burn." This event has been cited as one of the most famous events in Kansas history. On January 14, 1866, Lieutenant Colson's United States cavalry regiment destroyed a wagon train carrying goods between Topeka and Wichita that had come through Newton on its way east to Wichita Falls (now Wichita). This event is also considered one of the most famous events in Kansas history.

Newton was founded in 1868 by pioneers from Massachusetts and England who arrived on the same boat as General James K. Polk. Newton has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen "Cfa"), abbreviated "Csb" on maps. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Newton has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa). Precipitation varies greatly from month to month with totals ranging from none at all in January to over 100 inches (250 cm) during September or October depending on how much rain falls within that particular month According to the Geographical Names Information System, Newton was originally named Hingham after Nicholas Hingham of Ipswich, Suffolk, England who donated land for an academy and school there in 1868 along with his son John Hingham and other friends Isaac Andover and Thaddeus Stevens. In 1880 Newton had a population of 581 residents; by 1910 it had grown to 1,827 people living mainly within its downtown area including three high schools: Gibson High School/Prairie View Junior College South Campus; Westminster Bible Institute; and Central Presbyterian Theological Seminary/First Presbyterian Church which were both founded in 1892 as part of K-12 education reform movements following denominational consolidation across denominations throughout America led by President Grover Cleveland's First New Deal administration beginning with Calvin Coolidge's Taft–Hartley amendment having been passed into law on Decatur 19th 1913 known as "National Defense Act of 1923". In 1928 Quaker founder George Fox moved his headquarters from Amherstburg Ohio to this community later renamed Grinnell but continued religious services here until his death two years later at age 84 years old due largely to poor health caused by celiac disease he had contracted while living near Chicago Illinois where he served as spiritual leader for many Friends since 1775 when they first traveled westward preaching pacifism against war evangelicalism based upon principles laid down by Jesus Christ himself rather than political parties secular government controlled through rulers instead moral government grounded upon faith & love
