The museum was founded in 1903 as the Kansas City Museums Society. The society changed its name to the Kansas City Museum of Art in 1928. In 1951, the museum became an official part of the Kansas City Cultural District.
Newton, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. Newton is located in Riley County. The community was founded in 1856 by George Stephenson and others who came from England to prospect for oil shale near present-day Wichita, Kansas. Newton High School is a public school that serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. It has a student body of 511 as of the 2010-2011 school year. Newton also has two smaller schools which serve students from grades 7 through 10: KIPP Washington Elementary School and John Smedley Middle School. The community's first store was opened on Main Street in 1858 by George Stephenson with his son Jameson serving as manager and clerk. In 1861, Newton became the site of the first white settlement in Riley County when Isaac Parker homesteaded there and named it "Newton." A post office called Newton was established in 1866, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1969. In 1925, Newton voters passed an ordinance establishing a fire district that would provide services such as fire prevention and emergency response. The district continued to operate until its dissolution in 2009 by then-Riley County Mayor Linda Ladd Keyes upon recommendation of then-Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius after she discovered that some members of the district had been embezzling public funds. A new courthouse opened at 100 Main Street on December 4, 1951 following an architectural design by Eben Upton (1876-1948) who also designed much of Wichita's early civic architecture including City Hall (1898). After years of neglect due to lack of funding, renovations were completed between 2006 and 2008 which added modern amenities such as restrooms, cafeterias for both high school students and adults, well decks overlooking downtown Wichita (2007), expanded parking lot(2008), renovation/replacement of original roofing(2009), addition/removal of 3 large glass panels(2010) which replaced aging plaster walls dating back to 1897; courthouse now home to city hall museum & library (2013) According to Forbes magazine’s list dated July 15th 2013,[1] “Kansas ranks third among U States for best economic prospects overall” with per capita income averaging $6800 according to IRS data released just prior thereto,[2] but “has one major problem: Its image”[3] – presence resultant variously throughout United States being seen variously as having “failed miserably [in business] over many years”[4], leading one commentator recently observing “It doesn't look like any place I've ever been before - not even Lawrence or Topeka...There are billboards everywhere advertising all sorts of things like 'do you have insurance?' or 'get your car serviced?' Newton was a small town in east-central Kansas, United States. It is best known for its namesake, Newton County, which was named for English mathematician and physicist Isaac Newton. According to the 2010 census, the population of Newton was 527. Newton was founded in 1872 by General James H. Smith and his family as a farming community located on the banks of the Arkansas River near present-day Hutchinson. The town was named after English mathematician and physicist Isaac Newton who had moved to England in 1704 and become interested in mathematics and physics. In 1875, the first school opened in Newton; it served grades kindergarten through eighth grade until 1975 when district consolidation caused all schools within the new Wichita School District to be renamed "Newton". Today only one grade school remains open: Hillcrest Elementary School which serves fifth through eighth grades. The early history of Newton is reflective of that of many small towns during that time: Newtons were established around irrigation ditches or canals which facilitated growth because they provided water access without having to build dams or other infrastructure. The town's success may have been due to its location – close to major river crossings – as well as its good soil quality which made farming possible despite harsh climate conditions. Additionally, there were few roads in those days so transportation became an important factor for development. Bridges over rivers were also constructed at this time so that goods could be transported quickly from one side of a river to the other - something that would continue into more recent times with Interstate highways connecting larger cities across America
