From the early days of coffee roasting to the explosion of artisanal coffee beans, Newton, Kansas has been a major center for coffee production and consumption. The first evidence of coffee being roasted in Newton comes from 1872, when David L. Sumpter observed spilled beans coming from a small shop in what is now downtown Newton. Coffee was not produced commercially until the early 1900s, when some farmers began growing coffee bean trees near the railroad depot. The original two-story building where Sumpter's shop stood still stands today and is used as a restaurant called "The Shanty." In 1907, Dr. John Hutton started purchasing land in central Newton to grow coffeebeans. By 1919, Hutton had built a large farmstead with several dozen bean trees that yielded over 1 ton of beans per acre. This Farmsweet factory complex remains one of the largest inKS today and remains home to many of Newtons' leading exporters of artisanal espresso and French press coffees. In 1930, Dr. Harry Fenton bought land adjacent to Hutton's farmstead and began marketing his own certified organic green beans under the name "Fenton's". Today, Fenton's continues to produce high-quality products at their old location in central Newton despite changes in ownership or technology that has impacted their operations over time (See table below). Newton, Kansas is a small town in southeastern Kansas. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Newton is one of 11 towns in Pratt County. Newton was laid out in 1854 by Wm. H. Newman and named for astronomer Sir Isaac Newton. It became a town in 1867 when it merged with Independence to form Pratt County. The first settler in Newton was John Smeaton, who arrived there on July 17, 1854. He built a cabin near the present day intersection of Pennsylvania and Missouri roads. Other early settlers included Willard Beardsley and George Prentice (the brother of James Fenton). In 1870, the first school was erected in Newton on land donated by Mrs. Anna Joicey and Mr. Augustus Steedman from Topeka City across the road from their home on Illinois Avenue east of today's State Fairgrounds cornering Pennsylvania Boulevard/Missouri Road (now US Highway 620). In 1871, the first church was built at what is now First Baptist Church building southwest of today's courthouse square on Seventh Street between Main and Haskell Streets (now Wilson Avenue). In 1872, Judge Stephen Ladd Post organized a county court which sat at what is now Sixth Street between Main and Haskell Streets northwest of today’s courthouse square; this court served until 1907 when it moved to its current quarters northeast of today’s courthouse square next door to Jasper County Courthouse Annexes building herein mentioned (now part of Russell’s Service Department store complex)). In 1905, the new state capital moved from Topeka to Wichita so that Newton could become part of that city; however, despite being within Wichita's limits since 1905 until 1959 when they were annexed into Hutchinson proper as part of that city's population growth), Newton never regained its earlier role as county seat due to both political reasons as well as financial considerations having been meted out more favoritismately to Wichita over Newton during that time frame overall - though not without some protest from residents thereof! In 1916-17 ground broke for what would eventually become First United Methodist Church located southeast corner Delaware Street/Highway 169 about two blocks south east side where present day First Presbyterian Church stands adjacent thereto (this church would be dedicated May 2nd 1918) also serving as home for newly formed Uniontown African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church whose services would continue uninterruptedly through World War II even while Wichita had facilities available nearby exclusively used by black people rather than their white counterparts! During World War II many local civilians worked inside then National Guard Armory alongMain Street just northwest Of Today’s Kankakee Lawn Tennis Courts annex taking care Of weapons Storage & making use Of Class A barracks which had been constructed next door Prior To That date! On October 15th 1945 President Harry Truman announced plans For The relocation And consolidation Of All Federal Offices Within One Location Which Would Come To Be Called “The White House Complex” This proved To Be An effective Plan Which Ended Up Moving The Government agencies From Topeka To Washington D C However At What Was Once Our Local Home We continued Tosuffer resultant to our very low status within Pratts Counties government structure ever since! As A Result We have Recently Suffered Another big Depreciation In Value &URRENTLY Lack OF Resources So Many People Are ForcedTo Leave Who've Been HereFor generations Now& Most Likely Won't Return Any Time Soon!
Newton was founded in 1854 by James Newton and his wife Anna. The town was named for John Locke, a Scottish philosopher who invented the theory of natural law. The Newtons operated a cotton gin and a distillery before moving to their current location in 1865. Newton became an agricultural center due to its fertile soil, but it also enjoyed fame as the site of America's first oil well. In 1907, the town had only 8 residents and was renamed after General Leonard Wood.
