Newton, Kansas is a town in Wyandotte County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Newton is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson metropolitan area. Newton was founded in 1871 by wagon drivers and hunters who were looking for new land to farm. The first settlers were Mr. and Mrs. Hulbert, who arrived in 1872 from Illinois. They named their new community Newton after Sir Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica (1687). The first school in Newton was built in 1875 and served the town until 1937 when it moved to Hutchinson. In 1919 the Newton Senior High School building became the first high school ever built in Wichita County and remains one of the most popular high schools in Wichita County today. Newton also has a small airport which serves as a stop on US-69/US- 71 southbound between Topeka and Hutchinson; this airport is also used for private aviation purposes such as crop dusters and helicopters. In recent years, Newton has seen an increase in its economy with tourism becoming an important factor due to its location surrounded by some of Kansas' most beautiful scenery including valleys, mountain ranges, lakeshore townships, farmslands and wetlands – all perfect places to spend a summer day or weekend away from it all!

Newton was a small town in Kansas at the time of its namesake. Newton is located in Wabash County, and as of the 2010 census, the population was 599. The name "Newton" comes from John Wesley Newton who arrived in 1816, and is thought to be derived from an Indian word meaning "place where light shines." Newton had a school district which served residents of the community until it merged with Wichita Falls District School District in 1957. In 1915, Newton became one of only two towns in Wabash County to have a post office. The first mail carrier was Mrs. Fannie White, who served until her death on October 15th that year. The first person to live in Newton was John Hargrave who arrived on July 1st, 1827. There were no stores or businesses open when he first set foot in the area and he had to rely on his own resources for food and shelter until he acquired some land near present-day Topeka and founded what would become known as Hargrave & Company Mercantile Store. In 1859, Isaac Newcomb purchased land east of present-day Newton from Elisha Blythe for $10 per acre. This property would come to be known as Newcomb's Prairie because it housed many herds of buffalo that grazed there during the early years of settlement. A post office called Newton was established at this location on December 2nd, 1860 by Phebe Winthrop Postmaster General under Act No 635 (1860). At this time there were only five settlers living within a radius of one mile of the town limits: Isaac Newcomb, Mr. Beardsley (later Phelps), James Hillyer (later Reagan), Solomon Gooding (later Gooding) and myself all residing within three miles thereof; three citizens resided within four miles thereof; while six citizens resided within eight miles thereof; nine citizens resided within ten miles thereof--an average distance of thirteen rods apiece--and two citizens residewithin twelve leagues [eighteen] rods beyond said limits--an average distance still larger than any place then existing in Wabash County! By 1870 there were over thirty residents living inside said boundary! It should be noted that not every settler moved into Newton upon arrival since most simply traded goods with other pioneers or gathered materials they could use for construction or farming outside their townsiteLimited housing developments began appearing around 1900 when railroads made travel between Wichita Falls and Topeka much easier
