The Coast Guard has been in operation in the United States since 1879. At that time, the Coast Guard was a part of the Department of War. In 1917, the Coast Guard became an independent agency and was designated as The National Security Act's (NSA) first homeland security organization. In 1969, The National Security Act Amendments created the U.S. Customs Service as part of DHS and made the Coast Guard an arm of Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In 2003, CBP reorganized its structure to merged with other DHS agencies and create Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). In 2006, CBP merged with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to form ICE/CBP which is now known as both The Department of Homeland Security’s 16th largest bureau and one of four major law enforcement organizations within DHS. Since its establishment, The Coast Guard has played a critical role in national security by providing unarmed maritime patrol capabilities along our nation's coasts and waterways while also supporting homeland defense missions such as Counterterrorism operations and search-and-rescue operations during natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes. Merriam, Kansas, is a town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. The community began as a post office called Merriam on November 5, 1875. It was named for Professor Francis W. Merriam of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The first settlers were J.H. and Lillie Hanks who arrived in 1876 from Ohio and built a cabin on the present site of town on the Cache River. They raised chickens and cows and became farmers until 1890 when they developed a grain elevator to process local wheat crops into flour for local markets. In 1916 they also built a school which still stands today as the only public school in town and continue to serve students through grades 6 through 12 today. In 1951 the city of Wichita merged with Merriam to form one municipality but both communities retain their own government within their respective limits with each having its own mayor and council members responsible for its individual citizens while sharing services such as fire protection, police services, trash pickup etc..

In 1881, Merriam was a small but burgeoning town located in what is now the state of Kansas. It was founded by three men who were entrepreneurs: James W. Merrill, Hiram P. Smith and George H. Lowry. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Missouri River and its access to timber and cattle ranching opportunities. By 1886, the population of Merriam had reached 1,500 people and it boasted a school, store, church and post office. In 1914,Merriam became an incorporated municipality with a total population of 11,000 people. The town's economy changed dramatically during World War II as many residents relocated to rural areas in search of work in defense industries. However, by 1951 the population of Merriam had decreased to 521 people and it ceased to be an official municipality altogether two years later when it merged with Garden City into one political entity known as Garden City-Merriam

In the early 1900s, Merriam became an important agricultural center with its own cotton gin, flour mill, and grocery store. The town also developed a reputation for being a friendly place to live and work. In the 1940s, as World War II approached, Merriam became one of the largest towns in Kansas City County with its large population of military personnel. After the war ended, the town experienced a period of growth that included new development such as a shopping mall and urban renewal projects that destroyed many of its buildings but left it largely unchanged into the present day.
