Merriam, Kansas has a proud military history dating back to the early 1800s. The town was founded by settlers in 1847 and it quickly became an important center for the militaries of Kansas and Missouri. In 1862, Merriam was one of the first towns in the Union to be attacked and burned by Confederate forces during the Civil War. The town was rebuilt and soon became an important military base for the Union army. Over time, Merriam's military presence continued to grow, and it eventually became a major garrison for troops stationed in Kansas and Missouri. Today, Merriam is home to both the United States Army Garrison (USAG) withinits borders as well as two United States Marine Corps bases.
Merriam is a small town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Merriam was Hiram Hinton in 1854. George A. Brown and his family arrived in 1857 and they also named their farm "Merriam." In 1860, James Wibley settled on the same land as Hiram Hinton with his family and operated a gristmill there until he sold it to Orville Northrup in 1865. In 1872, John Weiser bought the old Brown gristmill from James Wibley and moved it to its current site where he built a new mill which still stands today. The Weisers ran this mill until 1896 when they sold it to Prentice Murchison who changed the name to Murchison-Merriam Mill Company. This mill continued operations until 1922 when it was acquired by Wichita Manufacturing Company which changed the name back to Murchison-Merriam Mill Company again before selling it to Haskell Paper Corporation in 1951. The mill continued operations for many years until it closed down in 1984 due to heavy use by paper manufacturers throughout the Midwest during that time period. Today, only a few pieces of machinery remain from when Murchison-Merriam Mill Company was one of Wichita's most successful businesses: a hand saw used for cutting lumber; two belt sorters that were used for sorting paper products; and an oven that cooked flour pasta doughs on open fire using wood chips instead of coal or oil fuel (later replaced by an electronic oven). A big part of what made this mill so successful was its innovative design: unlike any other mills at that time, Murchison-Merriam constructed its turbines using three pairs of circles cast iron plates that turned while water circulated through them fed into four lift arms above Which raised or loweredIndiana ditches filled with sandbags so that sawing could be done without noise or dust build up inside the mills (a feature unique among western US mills at this time). All these features contributed toMurchison- Merriman's abilityto continue making lumber even during difficult economic times - examples include World War II when demand for wood increased dramatically becauseof rationing; and post-war periods when production stopped because more efficient machines became available from East European farms competing against American mills operating out of Wichita Falls

Merriam, Kansas is a small town in south-central Kansas that was settled by the Mayflower Compact pilgrims in 1785. The town was named after the Massachusetts Merriam family who had been among the original landowners in what is now Clear Lake County. The first post office was established in 1872, and the first school was built in 1879. The community has grown since then and now has a population of about 1,500. The town was originally located on the site of present-day Clear Lake City. When the railroad arrived in 1869, it passed through Merriam and other towns along its route. This led to increased traffic and development around the community, which eventually became too large for one location and merged with Clear Lake City. Today, most of Merriam is within Clearlake City limits while a small portion extends into Johnson County to form another city called Mound City. The history of Merriam can be traced back to when Englishman John Smith set out from Plymouth on his Mayflower Compact Expedition in 1620 as part of an effort to explore new lands west of England. On July 14, 1785, Smith arrived at what is now Merriam after spending two weeks travelling through present-day Illinois and Indiana struggling against hostile Native American tribes along his way. Upon landing at Cape Cod he erected a wooden cross as a signal for others traveling similar routes to follow him home. After some debate among his fellow passengers about whether or not to name their new settlement after one of their own families (the choice being made unanimously), they elected John Smiths Landing as its initial nameakespite objections from some settlers who felt that it would distinguish them from their more prosperous neighbors on Plymouth Rock (although this did not stop other early pioneers from founding similar settlements throughout what are now central and southern Kansas). Although initially struggling economically due to low commodity prices during the early 1800s following Indian Removal policies implemented by President George Washington, MERRIAM slowly began expanding during this time period thanks both to area growth (due mainly to farming) and improving transportation options brought about byroads were developed connecting MERRIAM with adjacent communities such as Salina Springs, Topeka/Kankakee/Council Bluffs etc.. In 1907 MERRIAM incorporated as a city under state law No 2212 which allowed for municipal governments within towns having 25 or more residents without having annexation privileges given directly unto them by local governing bodies In 1951 MERRIAM consolidated with surrounding Johnson County municipalities forming Mound City government but retaining all municipal rights including water supply & sewerage services
Merriam was a town in Atchison, Kansas, United States. It was founded on December 1, 1857, by Methodist missionaries from Iowa. The town developed around the Post Office and Church of the Holy Cross. It declined in population after World War II and ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality in 1957.
