The second period saw increased population growth as railroad passengers traveled to Wichita and Topeka for goods then returned home via trains to Independence or Kansas City; this led to development of businesses along Main Street such as groceries, hardware stores, mercantile enterprises, livery services,and two schools - one high school and one middle school - which served Mcpherson's growing community during its early years. In 1854, a group of men from Kansas City, Missouri traveled to Mcpherson County in northeast Kansas to purchase land. The men were led by Major General James H. Kearny and Postmaster General David Glasscock. They arrived on the night of July 24-25, 1854 and erected a temporary courthouse in what is now what is known as the Kearny Ranch House Museum. The first court appearance in this new county was on August 1st. On October 4th, the first election was held with 11 members serving as deputies to the state legislature. On November 3rd, Charles Wickersham became the first white settler in Mcpherson County when he moved into present day Ford County east of Dodge City.
