Mcpherson, Kansas is a town located in Mcpherson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The community was named for James H. McAlester, an early settler and postmaster in the area.
The first settlers in what is now Mcpherson were Mennonites from Germany who arrived in 1847. They established a log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River and called it "Mennonite Village." In 1853, they started to build a larger cabin and named it after their leader and friend James H. McAlester (1812-1868). When McAlester died, his wife donated land to establish a village as her will directed. The first wooden homes were built in 1861 by John Cramer and others under his direction when he became postmaster.
The community gradually grew around its schoolhouse which served grades one through twelve until 1939 when it closed due to financial troubles that caused some businesses to fold or go out of business. The present day school opened in 1951 with classes starting on Monday mornings at 7:00am sharp. By 1970, homes had been built all around the original square block site so that there was only one street corner remaining from where the original buildings stood - this allowed for easy redevelopment when needed without having to demolish older structures. With assistance from Kansas State University's Institute for Historical Research (IHR), much evidence has been collected about both local history as well as cultural artifacts that have not been found elsewhere nor studied extensively before. In 2006-2007 IHR conducted two excavation seasons inside of old buildings discovered during previous excavations; these restoring efforts helped define many earlier civic leaders and residents who are better known today than they once were because their lives have been documented more thoroughly than ever before.
